5870 Vertical lines Crash

Hey,

Same problem here with my 5970. It has only manifested itself with certain i7 overclocks, the card itself is at stock. It hasnt crashed on me ingame yet or when running furmark.

I have settled on a 4Ghz OC which is thus far stable (2 Hours linx, 4 Prime95). There are numerous reports of this occuring on all 5 series cards, see below:

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?p=1336099288

http://forums.amd.com/game/messagev...=122932&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

Fingers crossed the upcoming 9.12 will address stability somewhat. Though so far so good.

Btw disabling the ati HDMI audio driver increases stability.

I have had this problem as well with my watercooled 5850. I find that it doesn't occur if I up the volts when running the card at stock. Don't ask me why it works, it just does for me.

Of course when gaming I have the volts up big time and the overclock but it never happens when gaming only when browsing at stock speeds.

Same with me -- never in games -- just when I'm doing very, very little on the desktop.

Bizarre!

It is definately definately definately nothing to do with temperature.

So far everyone that has suffered it has a 64 bit version of an OS (7 or Vista). So thats my best bet for the issue at the moment.

Roll on new drivers Wednesday ..

Baffles me aswell because I would point everything at some kind of overclock issue but then I use handbrake all the time and games etc and it really only ever happens during some like opening firefox or just leaving something downloading in a prog, nothing mega inetensive. Also passing linx and 12 hours prime etc. Britboy is your system overclocked by any chance?

Wheelscene your sig is way to big ;)

Forum rules are 4 lines max using normal or smaller text..
If no images are used then up to 4 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text is permitted. Do not pad out your text lines with blanks lines. A line of text is defined as having a maximum length of 400 pixels. If you want to turn the signature off in the future, you can come back and edit your post. If you have specified a signature in your profile, the box will be automatically ticked for you.

i had it once or twice, but when i installed the last catylsyt drivers package i chose custom install and unticked audio driver as i have no need for it anyway and so far i dont think this has happened on me since.

runs off and hugs big tree outside :D

Dang it dude - didnt see no rules on sig - been posting about a lot on forums of late and they asked for full spec in sig so they can reference stuff - thought I'd do the same here - my bad - hope the new one is less in your fizog!:-)

##Unhugs tree, runs towrds home to start ATI packages ready for custom install##

Had this happen a lot when i first put my new system together Sapphire 5870 and Asus Rampage 2, fine at stock CPU (920) and upto 3.8 but at 4.0ghz was starting to happen a lot.

Finally stopped it happening altogether by upping the CPU to 1.33v and QPI to 1.3 also, anything less on either of those would make it happen.

Ram is at 1.65, PLL at 1.81

CPU temps at dle are 35-31-37-33 (Heatkiller) never seen it go higher than 55 on any core no matter what i throw at it.

Sapphire is not OC'd and runs at 38 idle and hottest i've seen it is 58

I had been running rock solid at 4.2 - I have recently BIOS flashed my GPUs and its since then the problem has started.

Back at stock () everything seems fine - PC has been on all day without fail - and the problems (like others) have been in Desktop or low level stuff or "just into" benches - So im sure it isnt temperature related

I did reinstall my drivers after the BIOS flash - so maybe its them - anyway im gonna flash back (or different BIOS) run at stock for a test then get the OC back ..........

May sound wierd but something has entered the situation....I just tripped the system back to 4Ghz from 4.2Ghz and noticed something bogus.
Before when I had no problems with my card when windows 7 desktop just about to appear, the 5870 did a 2 second mega fan spin (mini hairdryer burst!) and then went quiet. This didnt happen while higher clocked? I'm probably talking shi7 as usual but suddenly thats back as if the card is behaving differently, like when it wasnt crashing the PC. Gonna monitor this one and report back....fingers crossed!

I keep getting this in Dirt2, but no other game. Good to hear all of the different scenarios and possible solutions. I'm more inclined to think it's a driver issue.

Try disabling the ATi High Definition Audio Device in the Device Manager, as thats cured this problem for a few people.

I hope it's not that, as that's the sound device I'm using!

It wouldn't surprise me if it was though as Dirt2 won't remember my sound settings, sometimes has no sound at all and is the only app that is causing this for me.

I had the exact problem with 2 5770's but it only happened in Dirt 2 and l4D2.

I relaxed my memory overclock and that cured it 100%. I had the same problem with a GT260 - 216 again my memory was overclocked to far lowering it slightly again fixed the issue

Both where prime stable but had the vertical lines issue in certain games.

That fixed it for me hope it helps :D

Yeah this worrys me, I cant see how these new drivers out tomorrow can cure all these problems with vertical lines, seems it's all about overclocks, I dont know enough about OC'ing to get round this so I have a bundle that I paid for to run at 4ghz, but to run my new card in a stable fashion I am forced to drop the clock completely, bit of a stuck in the middle situation. I was wondering if some one with 4ghz bundle with the patriot memory running a stable OC @ 4 ghz & a 5870 might be able to offer some tweaks etc???

i had it once or twice, but when i installed the last catylsyt drivers package i chose custom install and unticked audio driver as i have no need for it anyway and so far i dont think this has happened on me since.

well, must off jinx myself, loaded up ie and bam, had a completly black screen, had to do a reset as nothing worked:mad:

For whoever asked -- yes my processor and my 5970 is overclocked. But what totalyl confuses me is I'm only stuffed when the PC is doing very little (but something).

HAPPENS when I'm watching youtube videos or surfing round here or playing flash games!

DOESN'T HAPPEN when I'm playing any games on absolute maximum settings possible at 2560*1600. The PC working it's nut off is much more stable than it sitting doing very little (but doing something quite easy -- doing ABSOLUTELY nothing on desktop it also seems stable).

Anyway, before I use my valuable time trying lots of different things to no avail, I'm going to wait for these new drivers arriving tomorrow - which, fingers crossed, will fix it all.

This is not a 'specific 5xxx' card issue -- this is 'every single 5xxx' card issue.
