5870 with a Q6600

definitly go with upgrading to a 5870 its a brilliant card it can handle anything you throw at it eve with a weaker cpu like a Q6600 (which is what i have)

Cool I look forward to it arriving and then getting some new games for winter..

Don't game during the better months, cycling and RC Racing :D

save yourself £120 and get a 5850 mate ive researched it extensively theres only a boost of a few fps in most games and the 5850 is a lot shorter and easier to fit into cases

Well since the 5870 went in the system is resetting itself during games and I'm back at standard clock speed :(

Is your PSU powerful enough.

Try feeding a more volts the the q6600.

I got a q6600 GO @ 3.0ghz and a 5870. Using Asus P5K Black Pearl.

Interesting thread.

I have a Q6600 too. Although I have mine running at 3.4 GHZ with a 280 GTX.

I will be ordering my 5870 tomorrow, cant wait for it to arrive.

Corsair 520w

mine is a b3 :(

what voltage settings on a 956p-ds3?

It did 3Ghz with my 9800gt

got it to 2.7 last night

The crucial thing for me i have found is putting a small fan on the motherboard chip, i found a old cooler of a amd x1700 i think it was on, i just did it so it sits in front of the heatsink, since doing that and it not being warm at all to the touch my clocking went up, before i was restricted at 3 gig but straight away 3.2 worked fine for me.

The northbridge is very warm even at stock and now with a 5870 just above it.

It's in an Antec 300 case.

Fired it up last night and the clock speeds had reset back to stock.

So I am going to run at 2.4Ghz for the moment and then look next year.

Eye candy looked good in GRID, but not sure if it's maxed out yet. Need to find a FPS monitor

Been wathicn this thread.. im running a q6600 with the 5870 but my q6600 is at stock. been contemplating upgrading to a q6950 but not so sure.. hmm

My B3 has been sat at 3Ghz stable since I bought it like two years or more ago, has been up to 3.2Ghz but it was a bit unstable so have left it at 3Ghz till I got a new mobo which prolly won't be till next year methinks!

it was worth a try, but the GA-965P-DS3 isn't great at overclocking quads. Like all decent boards at that age they don't tend to have great cpu power regulation.

I wouldn't totally give up though, If you keep an eye out you may spot a cheap P35 P5K premium board or something similar very cheap that will get that old B3 quad over 3GHz :)

Time to change my motherboard :(

I have the GA-P35C-DSR3.

I found setting the FSB at 400 and multiplier to 8 gave a more than stable 3.2 GHZ.

Make sure your Mobo bios is up to date too.

Hey Mikey, hope you overclocking is going well!!

I have a Q6600 G0 @ 3.5ghz on a Gigabyte P35-DS3R with 4gb 800mhz OCz RAM and a GTX260, I also have the Antec 300. For the psu I have a 1000w OCUK competitor branded psu.

Unfortunetly my GTX260 seems to be doing, that will teach me for buying B-grade :( It keeps giving me graphics curruption, theres like a one pixel sized line going down my monitor, tried diff monitors and cables but still get same result, varying degree's of curruption.

Does the 5870 fit ok in the Antec 300? Did you have to cut metal away to get it to fit?
