hey guys,

im currently running a 5900X and wondering if upgrading to a 7900X3D or 7950X3D is worth it or not?

it will solely be for gaming, but I do multitask a lot with various program, I have 64gb RAM atm. But Im sure 32gb DDR5 would be fine?

It's hard to say if it's worth it without knowing your expectations, but you will get a lot more frames in games. If your frames are lower than you'd like or you want to increase graphics settings then a 7800X3D is pretty good value imo, and 32GB will be completely fine.

If you're playing at lower resolutions/settings and/or games that love the 3D cache, then you can see large FPS increases with a decent graphics card, but if you're just happy with playable frame rates (e.g. 60-90) then with a good graphics card the 5900X is more than fine for 1440p/4K.

If it's solely for gaming then you could get a 7800X3D, even just dropping in a 5800X3D would be a worthwhile upgrade.

I would wait for Zen 5 now, as a 5900X is still more than good enough. I did not notice the jump from a 3900X to a 7950X in games. I did notice the CPU jump and the drop from 64GB to 32GB for work.

It really depends on the circumstances and games.

For me going from a 3900x to a 7800X3D saw some titles go from 120fps to 220 and that was only on an RTX 2080 at 2560x1440.

I can easily see how some games wont see any benefit however and unless you really need to change I'd stick it out on the 5900X.

3900x is a good notch down from a 5900x though for gaming. IPC and just newer tech.

Can't say I'm going to jump to 7*** series now. I might when the next comes out and 'll snag myself a good second hand 7900x3D or 7900x from the MM when the "I must have" peoples are all over the new generation :D For now, 5900x does everything I want and need.

7000 series is a big upgrade in compute performance, temps are much higher though. Provides a long upgrade path, I say 7000 Series is worth it, especially with how cheap mobo's have become.

I can max out my 4070 100% usage at 1440p max settings or 4K DLSS with a 5700X, so I can't see a 5900X being a bottle neck for a 4070ti Super, nor you gaining much fps anywhere.

After looking at what a 5800x3d would do versus my 5700X, in all the games I've already played/completed, there was about 6% fps in it at a high end 4K/4K DLSS/native 1440P/4K DLSS, i.e. I'd gain about 7-12fps on the highest demanding 1440P 4K DLSS game, for example AW2 at 1440P maxed out with RT/PT off, a game of which I'm already achieving above 60fps in, which is SP, so taking it into the mid 70's would gain nothing, and anything less demanding that's already triple figures, is already enough FPS, so again, I wouldn't notice in the real world.

So for me, it was utterly pointless to spend £279.99 for a 5800X3D, and in CS2 1440P I can easily get 465-550 fps at native 1440p low depending on map, with zero stutters/issues, so I'd stick with what you've got, put some money away for the future in a couple years, as to justify next gen you'd want to change your GPU to a 5XXX series anyway...

I've had zero issues coming top 3 on CS2 in most rounds, even deathmatch, even on Wifi5 with the aforementioned setup, and I'm not 'amazing' at CS2, so don't worry about all any clickbaity videos with 'graphs' in YT videos, nor people banging on about "0.1% lows" etc, in reality, if it works and you max out your GPU with no stuttering/bottlenecking, stick with it. If it works, it works :)

I've just gone from a 5800x to a 7950x3d with a 7900xtx - I only play at 4k 120hz vrr on an LG OLED, there's a big difference in how smooth the games are now, not max frame rates (in most things anyway although some show improvements) - the main difference is the drops are gone.

Worth the price for the upgrade? For me personally, yes, but I got the new parts after finding some bargains, certainly wouldn't pay RRP.

Well been running my new 5950X for over a week now. Managing a nice 4700 all core with a single/duel core on 5050mhz... idle temps around the 25C mark on all cores which is nice maxing at 84C under heaving load testing (AIDA/OCCT/Cinebench) for 60-90 minutes... really happy with it.

It's not added jack really to my gaming as I game at 4k, but just knowing nothing is struggling is nice. Some CPUZ benchies are showing "Single Core = 692" and a "Multi Thread = 13400" so not that far behind a 7050x which according to CPUZ is 767/15728? However sure that 7950x can clock as well so, it's all horses for courses.

So, when I think about how much it's cost me to finally upgrade my Xeon E1680V2 (4600mhz all core) (motherboard finally went, well CPU power socket did!) after 13 years of service... £320 for the 5950x, £139 for the Mobo and £256 for the 128gb ram... wonder if I'll get 13 years of service out of this rig... doubt it lol infact I know I won't... the quality of the motherboards now compared to years ago, they seem a lot lighter somehow, just don't seem as solid? Who knows.

Interesting. Out of curiosity what memory did you have with your 5800x and what timings was it running at?
