6 months into V8 Vantage ownership

Thought I'd share my experience over the past six months.

Having swapped from an E92 M3 there was a mix of feelings for the first couple of weeks whilst I was making the adjustment into V8V ownership. First thing was the power - whilst on paper there was only 30 bhp difference between the V8V and the M3 it certainly felt noticeably slower, I think this was in part because it did not have that urge between 6,000 and 8,200 rpm the M3 was so great at doing, the throttle response was considerably lazy compared to the instantaneous sharpness that you get with the M3, and it also lacked the low down surge of power the M3 had, despite having nearly the same torque figures, which required dropping gears more than I was used to. I can safely say though, after a few weeks any initial remorse I had soon disappeared.

The first thing I did was remove fuse 22. This stops the vacuum solenoid from operating flaps in the exhaust which close between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm, to keep the exhaust note the same. By taking it out you get treated to wonderful V8 noise at full chat across the rev range, but more importantly there is no drone at all, so is certainly worth doing. Compared to the M3 the noise this thing makes is incredible, I found with the stock exhaust in the M3 was far too quiet.

The interior is a pleasant place to be. Lots of aluminium, nearly everything is leather with some nice hand stitching. The seats are very comfortable yet supportive. It does seem prone to rattles and have spent considerable time trying to eliminate these - although having come from the E92 it was something I had got pretty good at doing. I do miss the iDrive from the BMW and the DVD based Volvo sat nav unit they have put into this car is terrible. Visibility out of the car takes some getting used to and the aluminium dash is impossible to read in direct sunlight – but then again it does look pretty.

It does feel a very manly car to drive – brakes require more pressure than the heavily assisted brakes from the M3, steeling feels perfectly weighted and has plenty of feedback, the clutch is very heavy and the gearbox has a mechanical feel that needs some effort to get right, however you get used to it all I find it very enjoyable to drive and gives a sense of occasion to each journey.

I think the suspension setup is great on the car. Whilst the ride is very firm the dampening is setup well for UK roads and it doesn’t crash over roads which is something I noticed when test driving some if it’s competitors. Grip in the dry is very good, and whilst the Vantage is never going to be a razor sharp handling machine, it's wonderfully balanced, very predictable and inspires confidence to push on through the twisties, more so than the M3 I would say.

Looks wise I think the car is amazing. Nothing more to add about that one except to say it's wonderfully proportioned and doesn't really look as though its nearly 7 years old now.

Cost wise, with the exception of consumables (replaced the rear tyres and pads all round), the only thing that needed replacing was the centre rear brake light as some of the LEDs went out - cost £30. I've covered 3,000 miles and averaged 17 MPG. If you're driving enthusiastically it's very easy for the MPG to drop below 12 MPG though. Looking at used prices for similar cars to mine, depreciation over the last 6 months appears to be minimal, certainly a lot less than I experienced with the M3.

Obligatory pictures below.

The V8V is certainly a great looking and sounding car, and at current prices are an absolute steal.

I know someone who is looking to switch to a V8V from an M3 (though E46); will send him this link.

I've also had a E46 M3 so happy to answer any questions.

that a volvo key in the ignition?

Yes - on one of my key fobs the leather has worn off and on the back Volvo is very clearly written on it. The key is also from an old Ford. A lot of the parts on the car are either from Ford/Volvo/Land Rover/Jaguar, for example, the wing mirrors are also off a Volvo (s60 I think?)

Those buttons you can see below the gearstick on the side...are those for the seat?

Nice stitching on that leather. :)

Yes they are, in the side of the seat as well are buttons for lumbar and heated seats, unfortunately no memory seats on mine which is something the later models get.

Love it! Care to post up a video of it growling? :D

Will see what I can do!

Are the two cars similar power to weight

M3 was 244 bhp/tonne and the V8V is 232 bhp/tonne

If these continue to depreciate as they have done, a convertible V8V might get the edge over a 911 as my affordable dream car. Seems crazy to even think about realistic Aston ownership, but I absolutely adore these cars. Really glad you're enjoying yours, it looks like a nice example.

Was a little apprehensive about potential running costs, and while the car did come with the extended AM warranty, I think I'm going to let it lapse. Car has already had the clutch replaced which is around a £3,000 job which is good.

Recently the rear pads needing changing - Aston wanted £400 for the pleasure of doing so however I got the Pagid OEM ones from ECP for £120 and did the job myself, so doing jobs like that yourself and sourcing the parts more cheaply does make ownership a bit more affordable.

Hope you keep us up to date with how you get on with it.

I would love to drive around the UK/Europe in something like this.

Yes definitely going to plan for a trip to Europe in it, will need to do some research beforehand though on where to go

Stick a private plate on it and no one would know it wasn't new! Looks fantastic!

First thing I did was buy a V8 prefix plate for it!

Nooooo :(

I always find car-related plates so short-sighted. Get a good plate personal to you and it's good forever :D

I know someone with an 'R8' plate on his R8, and I just think... that's gonna be useless when you get something else :p

The last 3 letters are personalised as well though, so as long as I keep to V8s indefinitely then it should work out fine!

Which year of V8V did you get?

Mine is a MY06, the MY07 did get a newer style seat, but having test driven one they made the seat wider to accommodate larger people so found it to be not as supportive. Think there's only subtle changes until you get to the MY09 with the 4.7 engine and revised interior

Cool, it's definitely an awesome car. Whilst I've never driven one, the biggest complaint I've seen is that it feels "slow" compared to a lot of its competitors, but then it looks amazing to make up for that. How much was/is the AM warranty?

It's by no means slow, although coming from the S65 engine in the M3 it took some adjustment. Maybe it should feel faster than it does because on paper they are quite similar, although I'm sure if the throttle pedal wasn't so lethargic it would help, but like you say - the looks and sound more than makes up for it.

Warranty is about £1,200 for the year and again it's through a insurance policy which had quite a few exclusions. May live to regret not renewing but I already have an additional £1,200 in my bank account!

Have you removed fuse 22 yet ?

Mate at work has one and it sounds GLORIOUS with some throttle

First thing I did after 5 minutes of ownership :D It makes a big difference and it's still not intrusive or drones, although I've read that keeping fuse 22 out permanently causes the valves in the exhaust to seize up, but I'm sure they can be unstuck again if needed.

Assume it has a DBW throttle if the response is lethargic, maybe there is a signal amp for the car?

I have a similar issue with the CLK, my solution was to change the way I use the throttle, but most people fit a signal amp.

http://www.pedalbox.com/en/pedalbox/the-pedalbox.html

Thanks for that! Yes it is electronic so may have to take a look into it as I'm sure the mapping of the thorttle could be improved. Although I have heard that the power upgrade from AM (which has improved air intakes and ECU) does improve the throttle response, but costs a little over £2k :o

Have always been a fan of the current generation of Vantages. Sadly there have always been a few things that have bothered me.

  1. For a car which retails at over around 80k iirc. One would expect all parts to bespoke to that car or brand. I find it sad that it carry volvos poor nav. A brand such as aston martin should have a media system on par or better than that offered by BMW's great idrive.
  2. Have always thought this car could do with more power. Current ones produce around 420bhp iirc... 450bhp would be a little more appropriate.
  3. My former boss and I once took a trip to an office in the midlands from london in his vantage. The first thing that stood out was the gear stick and key fob. How car so good looking be supplied with an ugly looking gear stick and key fob.... Theres something very lazy about it.

Still a great car and I'd take one over a 911, gtr, m3, xkr!!

A lot of cars around that price do share common parts with other cars in the group. I think the issue is that AM does not have the budget for the investment required in developing an iDrive system. Even with BMW's resources the first iDrive that came out wasn't so great. I'd much rater they concentrate on other areas of development than an iDrive system! At least later AM's gets a Garmin based sat nav which is considerably better. MY09 onwards gets a crystal based key and is called an "emotional control unit", a huge improvment on the previous Vovlo based key fob!

Great write up.

As an M3 owner i've always had secret longings to get inside an AM Vantage, despite the 'not powerful enough' comments they always seem to get. They are going for some seriously tempting amounts these days, as are Bentley Continentals - although i'd lay money on the Vantage being a much less scary prospect if something went bang, or needed replacing.

I'm sure the V8V has the potential to throw up eye watering repair bills but the CGT would be in a different league!

Although the stock exhaust is excellent, I have decided to swap the exhaust having heard one in the flesh and being able to source one for a good price. This will be replacing it this weekend :D

Got the new exhaust fitted at the weekend - short clip from the sunday service. Very impressed with the extra noise you get when booting it, and more noticably lower down in the rev range, but still zero drone when driving sedately on the motorway. And it weighs quite a bit less than the stock system.

Totally out of interest but what would you expect a decent example (such as yours) to sell for?

Surely the warranty at £1.2k is worth it when it's a 7 year old car that is massively complicated and powerful?

Interested to know what you predict running costs to be in terms of tyres, brakes, servicing, unexpected repairs etc....

Probably somewhere between 32-33k I'd have thought.

This is very anecdotal but speaking to various people and looking through forums, they seem to be fairly reliable and do not seem to suffer from any major reliability issues. I thought with the amount of exclusions on the warranty and the possibility that because of the age of the car they will try and argue items are wear and tear, I'd much rather save the money and take it to a specalist when something does need doing.

Thermostat is a known weakspot and have replaced that after getting the part for £25 from Jaguar, instead of £100 from AM. Again with the brake pads AM wanted £530 for the parts alone but sourcing them from Pagid was about £250.

Have replaced the two rear tyres, kept with the original Bridgestone Potenza 275/35 R19s, cost £520.

The car has annual servicing, local dealer offers the following fixed price servicing.

Year 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th
Cost £720.47 £912.96 £861.47 £914.62 £592.07 £874.57 £878.37 £914.62 £718.22 £771.82

A guy I work just got himself an AM, keeps posting his Sunday Service pics :(

Dont' suppose you went to the same one?

Yes we all met up at the pub before heading into AM. The sound of all the cars leaving the car park was incredible I'm hoping someone managed to video it. You can just about make out my Vantage from that photoset.

That's what's happens when the leather peals off the key fob :D

From looking around the car this is what I've found so far.

Clutch/gearbox - Graziano
Engine - Jagular AJ-V8 based
Wingmirrors - Volvo V70
Starter motor - Land rover
Thermostat - Jaguar
Caliper/pads - Brembo/Pagid

Subject change... Have you met anyone who has increased their AM's power output?

If so by how much?

As it stands the engine isn't in a paritcularly high state of tune, I think they had to position it below the power of the DB9, so it should be fairly easy to get it from 380bhp up to 420bhp with sports cats/manifolds/air intake etc. I think some people have supercharged the engine but that's something I'd never want to do.

There is an official power upgrade for an additional 20bhp with an ECU upgrade and air intakes, but at £2,100 I'm out, may as well save the money and get a 4.7 :)

Oh man, that is awesome. This is a great thread.

What other cars did you consider before ending up at the V8V? Did you consider the SL55 or 997?

Is there anything that you don't like about the car? Did you look into the semi-auto box at all?

I love the sound from the AMG but I specifically wanted a manual so didn't get as far as trying one out. I did test drive however a 997 C2S and R8 as well. The R8 was very nice but over budget. While the 997 was slightly better to drive I felt on balance the V8V did it for me, and if I had gone with the 997 I would have felt like I had a ticking time bomb with the RMS/IMS failures.

Didn't drive the semi-auto as I was pretty set on a manual. I never got on with them from test driving a E46 SMG but I know I probably didn't get enough time to adjust to it. From what I hear the earlier ones weren't so great and eat through clutches. I think that's now it's considerably better with a 7 speed semi-auto box.

Were you worried that someone would steal your camera whilst you were driving away? :p

Not really no one was about, it as a nice and quiet until I turned up :D

Can't even imagine what a V12 must be like.

I'm not sure I even want to test drive one at the moment as I know I'd want one but they haven't dropped much below 90k yet! A lot of people say the V12 gives the Vantage the amount of power it should have. Certainly with 510bhp and P Zero Corsa tyres I imagine it's good fun :D

But I know I'd miss the dynamics and handling of the 911 too much and probably the outright speed.

Have you tried driving one? I drove a 997 C2S before test driving the V8V and was pleasantly surprised after some of the comments I had heard about it, although you can feel the additional weight there. I wonder if a Sports Pack version with the upgraded Bilstein dampers and ARB would be a worthy comparison.

Got a few photos today with the nice weather! Unfortunately driving back the clutch release bearing has started to make a noise. The job time for a clutch change is 10 hours so I get the feeling this could be an expensive fix.

Is the clutch issue covered under a warranty?

I decided against renewing the warranty, although I'm not sure whether it would have been covered? It wasn't the release bearing but one of the springs from the friction plate had snapped and was rattling around in the clutch assembly. It was close to needing a new clutch anyway. £1,500 of parts and 12 hours of labour later I have the car back. :o
