Is the above (Crucial M4) 64GB SSD enough to put Windows 7 Home Premium and Star Wars the Old Republic (19.4GB at the moment), and have them both run well?

My budget just doesn't stretch to a 128GB version at the moment, but I won't need the extra space for other games. Also, is this 64GB drive the best there is? I hear things about the new Samsung, but it isn't available yet. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Jack.

Depends on your set up, but I'd say no.

I use one as c: with win 7 and primary applications on and hit 47gb. I havent moved my 8gb page file though, which I'm told is an option.

I'm gonna get another 64gb and raid them, but if I was you I'd go 128.

I can't recommend the m4s enough. As people often say... Best upgrade ever if you have Sata 3.

Can you not afford a cheaper 120GB drive? Really its doubtful you will notice the difference between any of them.

Coming from what? Another SSD or a normal HDD? Different SSD to a M4 would be minimal i bet.

I installed a 64Gb M4 3 days ago, Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on it, 200Mb pagefile and disabled hibernation. The footprint is 14.7Gb with 44.7Gb free. That's with Office on and basic apps (AV, browsers, drivers, Adobe Reader etc).

Disable hibernation and that will chop a good ~10gb or so from the Windows install. There are other tweaks as well to slim down Windows, so it should be fine and be able to fit SWTOR with it. However, I would imagine after that you won't have much space on the SSD left... so I would stick with what you have for now, and wait until you have enough for a 128gb SSD.

How is that running with such as small pagefile? What RAM do you have?

4Gb of RAM installed. I can't feel any difference after reducing the pagefile size. There's headroom on the disk to put it back to the recommended 6Gb if I want to, but unless anything happens (or some benchmarks show otherwise) I'll leave it at 200Mb for now. I'm still tweaking things here and there as the install is brand new.

I'm currently on XP with full Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop CS5, Office 2010, Antivirus and iTunes. I've slimmed down the pagefile and disabled hibernate and everything is under 30GB on my crappy 2.5" 60GB HDD in my old laptop. I didn't need the full Creative Suite, only CS5; dunno why I did that.

I expect W7 will be a bit bigger than XP, but that still leaves me plenty of room when I get the M4 64GB SSD for a game or Lightroom. I'm still debating if I should just save up and get a 120GB+ SSD though. I know it will be better.

remember the winsxs folder will keep using up more space, you might need to allow for the windows folder using another 10GB over time.

Thanks for the replies, all. The Vertex 3 has just gone on a pretty large sale, how does that square up to the Crucial M4? I'm considering paying out for the 128 M4, if it's that good an upgrade, I may as well get a serious one.

When you have an SSD with windows installed on it is it actually ok to have the page file on a different mechnical drive? I have an old 250gb drive i was thinking of throwing in to go along side something smilar to the op here either a 64gb or 128gb M4 and i thought of moving the page file to it

As long as you have the space for it it's best to keep the page file on the SSD.

You can always limit the size of it anyway, mine is set to 4GB start - 6GB max and will be the same when I receive my SSD.

100% fine mate, if that is all you are doing :) Later on get another one and raid them up for double capacity and faster speeds.

The size after formatting is the most apparent, an extra 4GB from the M4 is not to be sniffed at. Also I havent seen a single compaint about getting the M4's up and running, at all.... where I have seen complaints about the others. But you are correct, it is unlikely that anyone could tell the difference with read speeds.... but if one is likely to do a lot of writing to the disk, I think it would be apparent that the M4 writing is slower.

The extra space is a big plus point yes but it works out at what £5-10/1GB extra compared to some? I just don't see why everyone is singing that the m4 is best? Its not the fastest nor cheapest but it "seems" reliable so far compared to some other drives. Are other brands (ocz) really that bad reliability wise?

For the extra cost of the M4 128gb over a cheaper 120gb drive your more than half way to picking up a second hand 60gb drive aswell. Obviously a lot of people will just recommend what they currently own but arnt most/all the bugs ironed out now of the older sandforce drives?

Maybe not, but after reading of the amount of sandforce issues I was very wary about buying one.
