6600K Where to go?

I've been enjoying my 6600K for a few years, running a 4k setup but generally play at 2k with a 1070.

I am thinking about upgrading the end of 2021 or early 2022 and wondering which direction to go in? I am not very impressed with Intels latest offering and wondered where we will stand on this front by end of the year.

I was thinking about an easy MOBO and CPU swap out but wasn't sure if just to get a 7700k or entirely upgrade to something new.

6600K is what you have surely?

I'll repeat myself in here, if you want a cheap but effective upgrade, sell your CPU/board/RAM, and grab a 10400f/B560/16GB DDR4 3200+ it'll probably cost you less than £100 after selling your old kit.

Little to be lost if you decide to change it again in 18 months to 2 years.

It does seem a tough choice of where to upgrade to. "Rocket Lake" does not seem 'worth the silicon'. I guess a move to AMD or intel from a 6600K would be good. I'd like to work towards 4k gaming but doing it all in one go is costly prohibitive.

As I said above, the platform suggested offers you an incredibly cheap upgrade after the sale of what you have, and opens up the opportunity to drop in a faster CPU is you should ever need/want. You'll see immediate benefits in new/modern games even at 2k with a GTX 1070, and if you buy an RTX 3070 or similar you shouldn't see any significant bottleneck with 6c/12, especially now that the lower end board/CPU's can run RAM at beyond 3200MHz.

By the end of the year we should know more about "Alder Lake" and whether intel have their act together. We should (fingers crossed) be out of the woods on supply issues on the AMD side, so I think that if you are happy to wait until the end of the year, do it, the landscape may be significantly different by then.

I was in exactly the same situation as you a few months ago; the 7700K is a pretty pointless upgrade. Get an Intel 10 Series or AMD 5000 series; my vote is for AMD.

As things stand, if you're going for new parts, then AMD is beating Intel. If all is available and within budget then it has to be AMD. Roles have reversed with Intel now trying to compete with brute force, pumping crazy amounts of power to obtain higher clock speeds, as AMD once did with their FX range. There are currently no real indications Intel will be able to overtake AMD again over the next couple of generations either.

I went to a 5800X from my 6600k for similar use cases and I don't regret it at all. Huge difference to gaming, where my [email protected] was really not cutting it anymore.

I tend to upgrade once every 4-5 years though, so I'm not fussed with jumping on DDR5 and the next generation of processors to come out ?next year?

I went to a 3600, from a 6600k. Difference was night and day... and when AMD sort out their act, I'll get the 5900x. This gives you options.

Alternatively, if you can just wait.... Wait. Get the next generation when there's actually stock!

It's certainly a tough choice considering what is around the corner and the supply shortages. That I run a 4k monitor but cant utilise it is maddening.

Looks also like the 11400 isn't a bad upgrade for little as a stop gap...

Whatever you do don't waste money on another quad core like the 7700k etc, from here if you do spend money it needs to be on more cores

It's difficult to predict what prices will be by then, if AMD have refreshed (Warhol) and Alder Lake is still due, then I'd imagine Rocket Lake will have some attractive price cuts. If Alder Lake has released then everything said now will not be relevant. Right now, it's probably between the 10400/11400 for a budget gaming upgrade, or the 5800X for everything else, since it's widely available.

It does seem the most awkward time to purchase. The choice seems to be hang fire or buy a stop gap system. Jumping on DDR5 and all that when it comes maybe a bit premature.

At least I think it rules out paying to go to a 7700K.

Would I be able to use the ram from 6600K system temporarily in a new Ryzen or Intel temp build?

If its DDR4 yes which it most likely is

The 11400F is an exellent CPU which will performs within a couple % of the new ryzen 5000 series CPUs @1080p for half the price, infact at 4K there wouldn't even be any difference in performance in games between a 11400F and a 5950X or 11900K which cost 5x the price.

£250 will get the a 11400F and a new B560 board which also supports PCIe gen 4.0 and is an absolute bargain for gamers right now.

Currently on i7 6700k, but saw offer on 5800x for £307 which I didnt pass up on wasnt planning on upgrading

Tough choices considering rocket lake seems buying into a dead duck

it isnt for midrange just this forums mainly amd biased. always has been.

11400 is a amazing gaming chip often beats the amd 3700 for nearly half the price. 10400 can be had for 120 quid new. also a great gaming cpu. there is some good cpus about for not much money to upgrade to.with current pricing and gaming only

intel 10400
intel 11400
intel 10700k

all great value cpus. especially if you get them when on deals.
