6700k overclocking tips needed

Haha, pretty much :p

Had a quick go at overclocking. Got it at 4.5ghz with a vcore of 1.29 and temp of 70c.

Pretty sure it will go higher.

Merry Christmas by the way :)

Haha pretty much sounds like the way I do the housework :D

Nice start there mate - and nice to know about you being stable so far on 4.6Ghz too, keep going :D

Merry Christmas to you as well mate!

Liam.

Cheers :)

I'm thinking the max safe voltage for day to day use is around 1.35? I may try to push it to 4.7ghz. But it is blindingly fast as it is. Witcher 3 is nailed to max 60fps whereas before i got a lot of dips.

Very pleased with the new setup and particularly impressed with the asrock z170 gaming k6 motherboard.

Keep the vcore below 1.400V to be safe, but ideally around the 1.328V mark with LLC to tighten the volts up in order to be stable, while keeping the temperatures down too.

To be honest, from what I've read up on and from what other members have mentioned too - the difference between 4.5Ghz and 4.8Ghz is very minimal. This is why I choose to stay at 4.5Ghz daily, to me this is the simplicity of having a decent overclock while being able to keep the voltage / temperature down in my case.

I may try pushing it a little further.

But to be honest, 4.6ghz is enough and i don't want to push the temps up too high.

So may stick where i am for now.

I'm still unsure whether I want to OC mine or not. I used to have my 3770K sitting at 4.5GHz 24/7, but the 6700K at stock 4GHz seems to be a bit more pokey than the OCd 3770k and it runs cooler with the fans set to 7v. normal use temps are 29/30 degrees, and the max I've seen in gaming is 62.

Like yourself, I'm also on a Z170X, and have the same RAM. If I do OC, then I'd prefer to keep stock voltages, and I'd be happy with 4.5GHz.

Hmm perhaps I should try!

Definitey go for it :)

Very easy to do. I have even dropped my voltage down to 1.29v and it's still stable at 4.6ghz.

I'm certain i could get 4.7 or 4.8 but i think where it is at 4.6 is a good trade off between performance, heat and voltage.

Well, it's done :p

Looking at the BIOS for vcore, it's set to auto and the BIOS reads that as 1.3v, which I know isn't the stock 6700K voltage. CPU-Z reads it as:

The temps have not taken a dent whatsoever:

The cpu frequency does appear to go up and down depending on OS activity, as does the vcore. I've seen the vcore go to 1.36v in CPU-Z, so looks like the BIOS/mobo is applying adjustments to meet demands?

For an ultra-quiet gaming/Lightroom PC, I'm rather happy with that!

I think you can reduce the voltage a little. 1.36 is quite high for 4.5 or you could probably bump up to clocks to 4.6-7 with that voltage. I assume you've stress tested it also?

It stays at 1.36 for seconds at a time. It's the Speedstepo feature really, normally it's hovering around 1.18v -1.28v really. I have left all voltages and things on the default auto setting, just upped the multiplier bit and enabled XMP.

I reckon I could easily do 4.6-4.8, but don't want to increase heat really as I like the fans all on silent mode.

It is best to use the offset feature i think. It should give you a lower voltage than the auto overclock. I have mine set to offset of +100mv but this will vary from board to board. I think the default voltage for these chips is 1.2v at normal clocks, so with the offset that gives me 1.3v minus a little bit of vdroop so i end up with 1.29v under full load.

My only real issue with that guide is that they leave LLC on auto, as a result some people may experience excessive volts. My 6700k is stable at 4.7@ 1.344v under load, LLC 6. However, if I leave LLC on auto I hit 1.408v under load. It's something you can easily play around with once you've got a stable base.

Very good thread, glad I found it. Basically just upgraded to Skylake build a few days ago. Had hardly anytime on it but it seems very fast with a new EVGA 1080. Unless I get plenty of free time my mindset is I'd rather play my games at the moment.
When I eventually do have time and find a game that needs the extra power then I'm gonna aim for 4.5ghz.

I've not had much time to fiddle with my new setup to be honest.

But it seems 4.6ghz was a doddle to reach. Took me no time at all to get it stable at that speed. So i suspect most 6700k's will do 4.6 at around 1.3v.
