6950 not working

Save the BIOS, then clear it to factory defaults. Put the card in motherboard now and try it. If that doesn't work, reapply BIOS save.
 
I've tried editing various BIOS settings whilst the 4870 is in, but I just can't get a single bit of life out of it. So so infuriating, I really don't know what to do. I just simply can't understand how I get NOTHING.
 
Is it possible to try the card in another machine? A friends perhaps?

Perhaps it isn't getting enough power. Can you try connecting it via molex to pci-e adapters instead of the 6 pin connectors?
 
No-one here at uni that I know has a machine with PCI-E (typical eh?!). Will be home at the weekend and I think one of my mates there does have one so will try it in his.

Will have a go with the molex adapters in a mo. Cheers
 
Flashed BIOS to the latest version last week.

Doesn't have a speaker, but there are pins to attach one on the MB. Might be able to find one lying around when I'm home at the weekend
 
Okay, I've tried this in another computer (albeit with the same PSU from mine - the other one was missing...), exactly the same problem. Of course, this means my PSU could still be the culprit, but it seems highly highly unlikely. A corsair HX620W should be able to handle this card EASILY (especially once I've unplugged absolutely everything else from the PSU - HDD's, optical drives etc.)

So this leads me to 3 possible conclusions:

1 - Both cards he has sent me are dead
2 - My PSU can't power the card
3 - For whatever reason, this card won't work in PCI-e v1 MB's (the other PC I tried is also PCI-e 1)

I'm waiting for a mate to come home so I can try in his PCI-e v2 board.

At the bottom it says:

Unfortunately, there have been some reports of new PCI-E 2.0 graphics cards refusing to POST (Power On Self-Test) in motherboards containing chipsets without PCI Express 2.0 support. We can assure you this is not by design as the PCI-SIG PCI Express 2.0 Specification is very clear on the issue - PCI Express 2.0 is backward-compatible with PCI Express 1.x in every case. With this in mind, and knowing that some PCI Express 1.x motherboards have no problems running the new graphics cards while others do, we have no choice but to blame the board in the case of no video. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to determine if problems await during the upgrade process; you must first consult with others that use the same video card/motherboard combination. Thankfully the cases of incompatibility seem to be few and far between.
