whats the best thermal compound for the 6970 ? , when i first got this powercolor it was hitting 93c after only a few min when gaming . was just about to rma
it and i noticed the screws were loose on the cooler , i replaced the TIM with mx4 and that solved the issue with the temps until now (was getting 85c max after new tim applied) .
i seem to be getting temp into the 90's again and i have used a tin of compressed air to clean the heatsink etc .
whats the thermal grease that is used on the 6990 ? , have read it is not the same as on the 6970 .

room temp is around 20-22c , mobo temps never go above 44c and 46c full load on my cpu

90 sounds fine. Is that after a while of gaming?
Mx-4 is probably the best you can get. I would say not to worry about it too much.
Why not get an aftermarket cooler?

strange my overclocked 6970 is running at 950/1450 and sits at a happy 53 degree idle in windows with dual monitors

doesnt go above 75 degrees even with full loading in games

Dd your heatsink come with a plastic film on it that you've to peel off? My cards were hitting into the mid 90's till i realised i had to peel that off, now they load at around 89c. Should be a sticker on the front somewhere saying about it.

what plastic film ?

My xfx cards came with a plastic film over the front of the heatsink, cards were runnig hotter till i noticed a sticker bleow the fan saying "remove film before use". Just thought the powercolour cards might also have had it.

mine has never hit 75c with 3 screens, i think the highest temp ive seen is 69c and that is not BS, i am not a bs er

My HIS 6950 at 840/1325 does not go over 78 in games like Metro, F1 2010, Fallout New Vegas. Yes I know its a lesser model, but still the 6970 should not be that much hotter surley!

What case do you have Chaotic_uk? :)

Ps Mine never came with a plasitc film.

Seriously??? I thought it was BS because my 6970 was always 60idle and 95 in game

If you play games with v-sync enabled it will get really hot because the automatic fan speed is a joke, I imagine most of the people with high clocks/lower temps run fixed fan profiles.

6970 has the worst cooler I've seen in recent times for allowing a card to overheat.

Hated the cooler

on a single monitor it used to idle at 33c but now i have eyefinity its jumped to about 45c but load temps are still the same, i did read an article that sapphire claimed a batch of 6970's went out with poorly applied tim on them, i cant link as its on another forum but this is the seriel nubers of the batch effected

 The only case of vsync effecting temperatures that I know of is like HAWX menu burning out cards because there was no FPS limit.
I experienced this in the Crysis 2 demo when online games where hard to join I stuck vsync on while in the menu to limit the fps and reduce the temperatures of the GPU's.
Is there some kind of situation where your system is generating 30fps with a 60hz refresh rate/fps limit and that somehow generates more load then 30fps without any vsync?

The auto fan should be reacting to the temperature, not to the fps or load.

thats the place, now ive been thinking, if all the first cards all were made at the same facturary as im led to believe and sapphire recieved some from a faulty batch that the thermal grease had dried out then surely his, xfx, powercolor etc would have recieved some to
