7 things NVIDIA doesn’t want you to know

Shock horror as graphics cards are overpriced.

I think we all knew this when they've crept up from £250 for a top end part to over £600 in just a few years.

That's not really true though is it? AMD wouldn't have had AA regardless of Nvidia's involvement.

That example always annoys me.

AMD cards didn't support AA within UE3 at the time, did they? Or more to the point the engine didn't really support it. It's forced, and seeing as it's an Nvidia game...

Gets real old some of this.

That's not really true though is it? AMD wouldn't have had AA regardless of Nvidia's involvement.

That example always annoys me.

It worked in the demo on AMD, it got blocked in the final build on request of Nvidia, the dev's lawyers stated they weren't allowed to discuss the matter-regardless another community **** storm resulting in swayed opinion either way.

Some seen it as a block others see it as np, the discussion is Nvidia practice, there is agreement/disagreement on an individual basis.

Much the same with the denial of(multiple) gpu exploding drivers, some believe it to be so, others deny it to the hilt despite years later nvidia 'agree' to reimburse after court proceedings with bump gate.

They have a bad rep for a reason, want some?

Lock out proprietary features when competitor hardware is detected.

REMOVE DX10.1 patch from games because we can't do it

DX11 is pants because we can't do it.

Block AA on BAA.

Look at AMD's rubbish CrossFire frame times, ours is perfect, fast forward a generation, release a performance driver and reduce frame time quality themselves to catch the competition.

**** sticks you know.

Why does a company with a bad rep as you say, continue to sell truck upon truck load of products ? Try and think of something else other than marketing as your answer.

Batman: AA is based on Unreal Engine 3, which uses a deferred renderer on DirectX 9.0. Deferred renders don't support MSAA in DirectX 9.0 without a driver workaround, which is exactly what Nvidia's DevTech team helped to implement (and test). Because of the tight development schedule though, this couldn't be tested on ATI's Radeon graphics cards.

Rege said "we had absolutely no time to go 'oh yeah, how can we screw ATI by the way?' Seriously, nobody ever has time to think about those kinds of things. In this situation, had we enabled something that was not tested on ATI GPUs [and broke the game as a result], there were a number of things that could have happened. The worst thing from my perspective is that the developers won't want our help in the future because we broke their game."

Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of Content and Technology at Nvidia, chimed in and said; "Even if we wished we could, we can't possibly expect to really support ATI's drivers. What if ATI changes the way its drivers apply AA and that breaks Rock Steady's game - whose fault is that?"

Moving on...

Guess we'll agree to disagree :p.

I think it was a dick move, but fair game.

This was before AMD and Roy Taylor. Roy built The Way It's Meant To Be Played from the ground up for Nvidia and at the time ATi had little in the way of stable relationships with developers. There was a lot of complaining from ATi regarding the scheme then just like there is now from AMD.

Like I say, it's all tit for tat. AMD want you to like them as it's in their interest at the moment. Nvidia won't care unless it's their prerogative to win back customers.

Furry muff.

@Frosty,

Since when did Nvidia/AMD give a **** if something worked on competitors hardware or not?

Everyone including Nvidia new AA worked on AMD as it worked in the demo, vendor restriction game code is a block no matter the spin.

This thread is so painful it reminds me why I spend as little time as possible in this sub fora

Shock horror as graphics cards are overpriced.

I think we all knew this when they've crept up from £250 for a top end part to over £600 in just a few years.

8800 Ultra (highest end you could get at the time) cost £328 in 13/07/2007 or £409 with inflation
Asus 5850 direct CU (a noch below the highest end like the 290 to the 290x_ cost £243 on 10/05/2010 or £278 with inflation
EVGA GTX 680 SC (highest end for the time) on 11/03/2012 (release day) £389.97 or £416
Gigabyte WF3 GTX 780 £409 in october of last year where the only thing. that was faster was not quite gamer focused Titian).

The point I'm trying to make out is when inflation is taken into account there's not been much of a shift upwards in prices eps when you consider VAT has gone up as well in the past 7+ years.

Nvidia have been a little bit more for the most part but the difference has never been mega huge on the high end and in fact my release day 680 was faster, cooler, cheaper than a 7970 at the time. This did change after a few AMD price drops and driver improvements.

Not much of a shift?
