As per title - mate wants a new system building and I'm out of touch with stuff at the moment.

  • Must have a decent sound card
  • Onboard GFX will be fine.
  • 19 or 20" Monitor
  • Vista

Apart from that anything goes :)

i know this is over budget but i think if you want to go vista then you need to be 64bit so youll also need dx 10 but this is well future proof

stinka

edit: missed out the optical drive so add £20

You dont need dx10 for vista.
8800GTS when the OP states games wont be being played - extremely pointless

the point is he has £700 to spend and wants a good soundcard a moniter and vista so in my opinion thats his best way to spend the money and graphics dont matter and its all upgradeable later.

Although personally I'd save money by using on board sound and not buying vista. The on board sound on gigabyte mobo's is fine. Why does he need a sound card?

Edit: Doh, I forgot a case. But there's places you can get cheap cases from, OcUK don't seem to like stocking cheap cases

Liking the look of this one :)

As I said - I'm out of touch with stuff at the CPUs and MOBO's at the moment - other stuff I can work around the budget - Just need pointing in the right direction for these two parts.

Case etc I'll get him to choose.

GFX card is NOT needed - so there is no point speccing a system with a £200 GFX card - its plain overkill guys! Onboard will more than do the job here.

Vista Basic also seems pointless

The reason it is so expensive is the Vista Premium.

I would advise you to get upto £800 and add a cheapish graphics card, it is needed IMO.
