So the University of Nottingham reckons the food for a xmas dinner for 6 costs £74 now.

Is it me or is that figure somewhat overblown?

How much does your's cost do you reckon?

£12 a head is about right unless your looking to have plenty of left overs, turkeys pretty cheap. (that doesnt include dessert/drinks though)

That's a total bargain. I think I could spend that on starters and pudding. Once you factor in main course and drinks... :o

2x xlarge chickens = £14
yorkshires puddings = £2-4quid
gravy = £1
stuffing = £1-£2 (packet not frozen u lazy ******)
roast potatoes = £4 quid
brussel sprouts £2
cauliflower £1-£2
parsnips £1-£2

gateu from iceland or somewhere for £5 (your student FFS what you expecting?)

so about 40 quid and you still have money for some drinks

anyone who needs 74quid or more to do a christmas dinner for 6 people must be shopping at harrods

^^ we prefer good quality fresh turkey to chickens :p
£7-£9 per person will be the likely cost of our turkey (big boy portions of ~1lb), obviously veg is very cheap and allow a £ or 2 for kilted sausages

u can get a 7lb turkey free range fresh from m&s for 21quid, anyway the point is 74 quid for 6 students is stupidly doable, you would have to be a fool to not manage it

once you've cooked it and taken the meat off the bone that 7lb turkey will be looking mighty small for 6 people, your going to need more like a 10lb+ bird and prices start at £28 for the cheapest from m&s

We done ours a few days ago. With chicken instead of turkey cost us less than £5 each excluding drinks. 6 of us and yes there definitely was enough food!
Cost us about £15 last year, but we went overboard with everything and included a fair amount of drink.

I can't do a Christmas dinner for two for £74! It's the one day of the year where I don't feel bad for buying the best quality food irrespective of the price.

This was my xmas dinner last year

Turkey crown - £35
Beef Joint - £15
Pigs in Blankets - £8
Spuds - £6
Veg - £10
Goose Fat - £4
Yorkie Puds - £3
Stuffing Balls - £3
Apple Sauce - £2
Cranberry Sauce - £2
Bottle of Wine - £10
Christmas Pud - £8
Gravy Cost - £1

That is over £100. That was for 2 adults and 2 kids. Mind you, my portion was rather big!

Looks like a bargain to me.

My local restaurant charges £30-40 per head for a christmas dinner in the week running up to christmas (I think). Whereas on a normal day you can get a carvery and a drink for less than fiver.

Proper farm bought turkey isn't cheap, nor are all the stuffing ingredients etc.

depends, i could have bought direct from a farm at just over £4/kilo for turkey which is a pretty damn good price. Though i don't like turkey so went with a nice pork joint instead
