Currently got a 1080p projector in my gaming room, I'm thinking of replacing it with a 4k HDR TV. The TV would need to be 75" or bigger as to not lose too much size.

I've been looking mainly at Samsung TV's.

I know the S7500 series is highly regarded but what about the S8000 and S9000 range? Are these better?

I've been looking at this TV in particular -

Other option would be an upgrade to a 4K projector however I don't know anything about these. Current projector is an Epson TW5200 -

Thoughts?

Upgrade your projector / screen / room you'll get much more bang for buck. What's your current screen and room setup? If you're not already, try out a JVC or equivalent projector to see what they're really capable of.

Agreed. If you want to go big then you'll do better to batcave the room and/or upgrade your pj. As big as a 75" panel is, it's considerably smaller than a decent pj setup and it won't give the cinema experience. There's something special about sitting in a blacked out room watching light hitting the MASSIVE screen in front of you :) Flat panels have their advantages too - depends what you want really.

Personally, I wouldn't trade an pj for LED if I had the space and permission to treat the room. A larger OLED is a closer call. Do you want a home cinema experience or a cinema cinema experience?

Current set up is a 1080p Epson projector, projected straight on to the wall at just under 100"
Sound system is in progress I've got a 5.1 system to connect up.
There's a sofa and 3 bean bags in the room then, it's mainly for gaming - PS4, psvr, wii u (Mario games look incredible!) but also to watch blu rays and Netflix.

Not a great pic but all I've got at the moment, all the bits to the right have now been cleared!

Might be worth investing in a projector screen and possibly upgrade to a 4K projector opposed to a large TV? The price does shoot up after 65" :(

What colours are the walls/ceiling? Treating the room will likely make more difference to the picture than a new projector combined with a new screen. A screen would mean less size too as you couldn't have the picture that close to the wall. If you can't treat the room, i'd go for a panel - you'll get a much better pq. If you can, try painting the screen wall and walls/ceiling coming as far out as you can a dark colour. Better yet, wrap black velvet around foam boards and do the same thing. Then when you do upgrade the pj, your mind will explode! It will look like a massive plasma screen floating in space.

This is the only pic I have of my old, 100" painted screen (I know :P)

You can see the start of the panels coming out on the ceiling - eventually they came out a few meters and the screen wall was done too. This made a massive difference. The screen was then replaced (5 times!) and ended up coming right out to the door (120") and the rest of the ceiling painted mat black. The results blew going to the cinema away. The only thing that wasn't dark was people's clothes - I had special blankets to fix that :D

PS4 - 1080P
Wii U - guessing 1080p or less res
Blu Rays - guessing 1080p ones and not 4k, do you have a 4k blu ray player?
Netflix - Are you paying for the 4K package or willing to?

I'm wondering why you need 4K tbh, it looks like your only source is netflix which doesn't exactly have enough content to warrant spending say £3000+ on upgrading.

You don't even have a proper projector screen for instance like a React screen which retail for £1500+, etc.

Also 4K projectors are even more expensive than 4k TV's they aren't even worth considering atm, they are ridiculously expensive.

Basically get a decent screen, then get a decent projector then upgrade to 4K when it warrants it. Currently you have little to no content to even be worrying about 4K. Have you seen the cost of 4K blu ray players?

I got the impression he was interested in HDR? And HDR requires 4K, unfortunately!

If it were me I'd stick a good screen in there. Your projector really comes alive with decent material to project on to. You will probably find a new lease of life in your projector yet!

If you sand the wall you can get a very good surface to project on - on par with a cheap screen. Picture quality wise the main issue at the mo is light bouncing of the walls (especially the close one on the left) and ceiling.

He doesnt mention hdr at all in his second post.

Also again netflix is his only source of hdr atm. Hardly worth dropping £3k+ for netflix

You can get a decent Sony 4k PJ for about £5-6k (320ES I believe). Not sure how much a 75" costs but a 65" OLED top of the line is about £4-5k. If you do upgrade theres no point not going for a 4k PJ now as the content is now out there and will only increase.

£2,750 for a LG 65" OLED.

About £200 for a Xbox One S... not exactly expensive.

maybe he doesn't want to have a big clunky console within his home cinema system. especially a system with a 75" or bigger physical tv and especially with the cost of such a system involved.

which is exactly why this is pointless. OP doesn't even have a screen or surround sound speakers set up yet people are suggesting he drop £6K on a projector just because it's 4k (when he only has netflix), again a 75" tv will be around £6K too because it's a ridiculous size atm, they don't make many panels that size.

he needs to get a decent screen and if he wants more a better 1080p projector.

£2,750 for a LG 65" OLED.

he wants 75" minimum though so it doesn't matter what screens smaller than 75" cost

If you must spend the money get a 4k projector and screen (ie you saved for this). Your current image height isnt ideal though though...

I can appreciate what sonny is saying about getting a 1080p pj, but if you've got the cash and plan on investing in 4k in the future the 4k pj makes more sense.

Option A: spend £6K now on 4k projector with next to no content

Option B: spend £2K now on a decent 1080p projector. Put £4K aside for the future when decent 4K projectors will cost £2K and you have access to content. Means you then have £2K to spend on a decent screen or speakers.

Option B looks like to be the most sensible option. future proofing for the sake of it with new technology is usually ridiculous when you could wait and get better tech for less than half the price.

The reason why many are waiting for OLED's to drop in price before upgrading
