7500 to a 6700K

Hey guys,

Got the PC as I wanted basically..only thing nipping my backside is the CPU..

Would it we worth an upgrade from a i5 7500 to a 6700K? Reason I ask is I have vouchers for a big retail company and can get one for a good price.

If so, would it worth on the KabyLake platform (motherboard) or would I need to backdate / downgrade that?

Cheers.

Depends what you mean by a good price? Take 1/3rd off the price of a 8700K and a bit more due to being now nearly obsolete. I wouldn't personally pay over £200 for one, new.
Mobo's, Z170 and Z270 mobo's will work I believe.
I still use a 6700K which I was tempted to upgrade but decided not to as it's still a solid processor, but buying new I'd expect one to be priced vs the 2 more core 8700K

Well, you can get 7700K retail boxed for <£250, and that's still over priced for what you are getting. You should tell us about the price in vouchers that you will be paying, and what other parts you have in the system, maybe they could be better spent.

What motherboard do you have now? If your motherboard is decent then sticking in a 6700k/7700k and overclocking it would be nice simple upgrade.

The 6700k and 7700k are overpriced though, with the latest gen processors you can get the 6 core i5 8400 which is about the same performance for £130 but it does require new board.

I have £140 from a retailer that sells second-hand items with a 2 year warranty..but the CPU is a little pricey on its own for being second-hand, (£225)..

My rough spec is:
i5 7500
16GB DDR4 RAM
RX 580
Basic motherboard - Gigabyte H110M-H 1151
128gb ssd for OS
500gb ssd for games

Ideally a CPU sway without much else would be prefered, but open to options you guys give :):)

I don't think you can overclock on that board so money spent on a unlocked k processor would be wasted.

Do they have any non k i7 6700/7700?

If you wanted to get latest gen you could pick up brand new 6 core i5 8400 + motherbaord for less than the 6700 would cost you and it would be faster in games.

Worth noting you can get an 8 core AMD 2700X for £299.99 here at OCUK. That's £50 off on a -14% deal running atm, brand spanking new :D. No good for your mobo but puts pricing into perspective....

It's not really a £50 saving though, since it is £270-280 most other places, and has been cheaper from OCUK, for some reason they are highly un-competitive on current gen Ryzen CPU's

OP, I'd say there's not much worth changing unless you can get a cheap 7700 (non-K)

Only had a quick look on OCUK for pricing damn that makes £225 for a used 6700K crap value :). I know what I would prefer.

The 7700, it seems to be cheaper..although, the specs are not quite as good as the 7700K? Would I still be better with a 7700? Or a 7700K (which I wont OC)?

I think it's the boost that matters 4.2 on the 7700 and 4.5 on the 7700k. So not much in it.

I would save your money and just put a 7700 in there. Seems a waste spending extra £50 for unlocked one when your board doesn't support it.

Up to you though.

What graphics card do you have?

Yeah, I see where your coming from. I have a RX 580 in the system (just installed today actually) and I think my CPU is bottle-necking it a bit tbh? Could that be the case as the CPU isnt the strongest?

A lot of games will be perfect on your current cpu but other more demanding games only having 4 threads will be a problem especially big multiplayer games like battlefield.

Upgrading to i7 would help a lot on the demanding games that need the extra threads.

What games do you play?

Battlefield 1, Far Cry 5, CS GO, PUBG etc...

Is it worth the upgrade? If so I will pull the trigger on a 7700 tonight..

Yeah I think the 7700 would be decent upgrade for them games.

If I had your board and graphics card I would stick a 7700 in there.

Thanks for the help mate. I have just ordered, can see what difference it makes, and can return if a problem / dont like it!

Will update once its in the system :)

Received the CPU this morning. Just installed it.

Quick question, even thought the TDP is the same as my 7500 (65W) it seems to idle / load a bit higher in temps? Is this because the extra threads / higher boost??

Yes,Intel has rough groupings for their CPUs,as the TDP class is more a cooling requirement. So I would expect the Core i5 7500 to be technically in-between 45W and 65W,so it will be grouped into the 65W class.
