7700k Tested at Tom's Hardware

Do Intel not want our money, or is the world truly rammed with enough rich idiots who'll fork out for an upgrade from 6th to 7th gen, even though it doesn't make any significant difference?

Guess I'll just settle for a new tube of heatpaste and forget the 7700k then. Least it's cheaper!

This is the reason I went x99 rather than wait for kaby lake. The next step will be more cores.

I remember when BFBC2 came out and my E8400 couldn't deal with it. I then bought my trusty i5 2500k but BF1 has now shown me it's age, probably due to the lack of threads rather than cores.

I only upgrade my system once every 3-4 years so I'd rather have an extra 2 cores than slightly better IPC of skylake.

You can always up the frequency but you can't make up for a lack of cores. I also do a bit of photo and video editing so it made sense for me.

I have to admit i am considering an x99 board and 6800k rather than kaby lake.

More cores is probably the way forward long term.

What is an average overclock for the 6800k though?

I think 4.4 - 4.5 is about the max. Heat and power go through the roof after 4.3ghz. I've got mine at 4.2 @ 1.255v and tops out at 60c during a half hour stint on real bench with a 120mm AIO.

TBH I know people recommend skylake for gaming but to me asmall difference in frames in games (usually 6-7fps or less) but added future proofing is worth it. The boards aren't cheap though!!

I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner (multi core utilisation). Both consoles are 8 core, dx12 should make it easier to use cores and until there's a big breakthrough in CPU tech spreading the work load over numerous cores seems to be the most like avenue for performance gains.

Buying X99 at this point is a big mistake IMO. It's been out so long, best wait for X299 (Skylake-E) which won't be that far away.
