More cores is obviously the next big thing, has to be when Intel are bringing 6 core Coffee Lake to the mainstream.

I have to admit i am considering an x99 board and 6800k rather than kaby lake.

Buying X99 at this point is a big mistake IMO. It's been out so long, best wait for X299 (Skylake-E) which won't be that far away.
