7900 GTX sli anyone doing it?

2x7900 gtx's cant get the data quick enough at low res. the gfx cards are hardly doing anything, they wait on the cpu all the time.

Check 05 benchies for proof. See massive increases in score as you overclock the cpu.

Just think of quad sli  absolutly useless as the cpu cant harness that power unless you game at 2000x1400.

no joke.

Tom

EDIT: Graphics card technology has been ramped up so far in the last few years and cpus have what? a couple of hundred megahertz. Dual cores i grant you but even then the games dont use it.
Im running an fx67 (ish) btw

so what speed is that dual core you have running?
Im not running low res though.

welshtom said:
depends, 3 - 3.2 ghz

Depending on resolution, that cpu will be way too slow for SLI.

need to be pushing over 3ghz.

Tom

Oh right so what you are saying is that an opty dual 2.8ghz is way to slow for SLI.

But just another 200mhz running at 3ghz is not?

BTW what cooling are you using?

stop being so condescending! read the thread thats primarily aimed at you.

I said at low res that opty prob will be the bottleneck! I didnt say mine would be better or that it would not be a bottleneck .In fact i said 3.5ghz is still cpu limited.

Read before you post next time.

And a mach 2 is my cooling.

Tom

Hey hold on a min you have taken my post in completely the wrong context

It was a genuine question.Info is needed for me with regards to SLI.
And if its worth overclocking my cpu a bit more.

I have no first hand experience really with scalable link interface.

Thats all

Another £400 for 1 game = nuts. Oblivion is the same as morrwind when it was released, nothing then would run morrowind full whack at acceptable fps. Play it through a bit laggy this time then play it again next year when the new big pimpinus cards are out.

Thanks

Nice post.

I dont wanna wait. Can sli make oblivion snappy?

Madness... but then again, if you've got £400 burning a hole in your pocket easyrider, just get one, it'll look nice in your sig at least. :)

LOL

no interest in sig zest.

I want oblivion zest.

and from what u guys say is not gonna happen?

No problems with that mate, as I've got the 1st one watercooled & the 2nd waterblock is in the loop waiting for the 2nd card.

I may still place a fan to blow across the RAM sinks though.

As my 1st BFG card is currently overclocked to 730/930

can you post some data when you get the 2nd gtx installed with oblivion?

kbc said:
Oh? :o ;)

I've read a few threads and even with dual SLI setup, you're still going to get framerate drops in outdoor areas... don't expect to see continous high framerates seems to be the message... seems crossfire has the edge in most cases. ;) ... from reviews...

oh...thanks for that.

so 50 fps up is a no go with sli 7900 GTX outdoors?

Haven't got Oblivion mate.
I've held off getting it as I may get it with the Xbox 360 when I purchase one.

I've seen a good discount off the Home Cinema projector that I want as well.
So a 2nd card may be put off for a bit longer.

I can't decide ;)

seen xbox 360 oblivion and it seems laggy outdoors in battles

Hmm... X1800XT crossfire is a good way to go for some ultimate Oblivion performance! :)

If I were you, I'd stick to a single card solution - that's a lot of money.

money not really a problem.

i'm no wasted spender either i like value too.but if i can boost good for the next few months playin oblivion ill buy.

but by the sounds of it you all seem against?

Well if you have the money..

It's not good value IMO. I'd wait until the price of 7900 GTXs come down before getting another one at the price they currently are.

It will boost your fps but outside in grassy areas with everything on (and I game at 1680 x 1050 with HDR) Oblivion will still bring your rig to it's knees. It's cpu limited in many places. Extra gpu power can only do so much.

I guess outdoors plus 50 is out of the question, even with xfire and sli?
the game just is ahead of its time?

You still resisting easyrider?

I have just replaced a X1900XT-X with 7900GTX SLi

I game at 1920x1200 on a Dell2405. I mostly play COD2 online and Oblivion at the moment.

The difference on COD2 with SLi was extremely good. I can max out all the settings with no problem, I couldn't get any where near that with the X1900XT-X card.

I have to reserve judgement on Oblivion at the moment, as I have only tested it for about 5-10 minutes. First impressions are favourable though, the framerates were a lot higher. I'm sure there will be some lag somewhere, but at least I know there's nothing else I can do about it!

Yup have resisted the temptation at the mo.
whats scores are you getting in 3d 05 and 06?

More info on oblivion would be good too :)
