7900GTX SLI issues

Single slot models. The 7900's run cooler and use less power than the 7800's. I ran the system with the sides off and fans blowing into the case from quite an early stage as I had considered it a possibility. That's also the same reason I changed to the expert DFI board from the normal version, to provide more space between the 2 cards, turns out of course that it was a waste of money :P

ICEMAN, iv heard of problems running SLI 7900's on DFI boards over at dfi street forums, its beleived to be a driver issue, only thing I can think of is wait for new drivers for chipset and the cards themselves, the hardware isnt faulty, just some driver glitches, head over to dfi street to find some stuff on it there

!!!!!!!!!!!! READETH THE INFO  :D

Ok well I scoured that forum yesterday and today, I've found no mention bar one post of some guy that has problems with a pair of 7900 GT's, certainly with no mention of a conclusive reason as to why it's happening. Would you mind directing me to the right posts? I honestly can't seem to find them.

Are you running the 12/07 BIOS? A lot of SLI owners are having the issue you describe and went back to the 11/02 version with better results. I had exactly the same problem when I switched from my SLI-D to the Expert, drove me mental fault finding it, benches etc run for hours, 3dmark, prime etc but Quake 4 crashed after 5 minutes. I sold the 7800gtx's and went for a single 7900gtx and the issue magically disappeared, since read that the BIOS rev and SLI is the problem.

Do the drivers let you enable SLi or do they not even let you get that far?

As were seeing similar problems here at OcUK HQ that 7900 GTX's seem to refuse to work in SLi, but 7900 GT's seem fine.

Just a thought and probably not the cause but with my rig i had similar problems as you when i first set it up. Are you running raid at all? I was running raid 0 and it causes some sort of conflict with the NF4 Sli chip on my board and i kept having crashes or one of the cards not being recognised. This was intermediate and sometimes went a couple of days with no problems but at other times it would get stuck in a loop of crashes and reboots. I disabled raid, reformatted and went back to two seperate sata drives and the problem was cured.

I know mine is an Epox and on 754 but it was worth a mention i thought.

Yeh I'm running a RAID array as my storage setup, Windows is just on a single 36gb raptor.

It's letting me enable SLI, no problem at all and it gives me the relevant performance boost, its just the random crashes  I really don't want to have to sell the whole lot and go ATI, would be an expensive switch.

That really sucks!! Does that mean that if you have a pair bought specifically to run in Sli and they don't work properly because of this problem, that you can return them to wherever they were bought from as they are not fit for the purpose sold? This is going to damage Nvidia i reckon, more than the company who puts the cards together.

It seems to me like a gerneral problem with 7900GTX cards, especially as Gibbo said they are having problems at OcuK with them.

It may be worth getting in touch with BFG to see if theres anything they can do about it.

BFG have been very helpful, but then most companies are when you tell them you're from a review site, however the people I've spoke to there don't really have any idea what's causing these problems. In reality I'd suggest the crashing problems that many have experienced are probably from the same issue that's causing the issues in that link.
