7900GTX SLI issues

I was having a problem getting SLI to work with a pair of Gainward 7900GTX on a DFI Expert. I managed to solve this and get it working by swapping the cards around in the slots.

I had previously just got a blank screen after enabling the BIOS and didn't get to be able to enale SLI, as I couldn't get a windows screen.

Go figure huh.

Sounds like you just a badly seated card, I've had that happen a couple of times in the past.

I don't want to tempt fate but installing the modded 0406 bios *appears* to have cured my problem, haven't had any issues for a few days now. This should help for those of you showing concern about getting a second card. I'll keep you updated.

Do the drivers let you enable SLi or do they not even let you get that far?

As were seeing similar problems here at OcUK HQ that 7900 GTX's seem to refuse to work in SLi, but 7900 GT's seem fine.

so will my GTX not work in SLI if i get another?

Please advise

Thought I'd post again just to let you know that I'm now suffering from the problem in the link I posted a few posts above. As soon as my one card hits 70c - freeze, locks up for 10-60s sometimes never comes out and just reboots my machine. I know which card it is because when I shove the PhysX card in the PCI slot beneath the faulty card, it hangs as soon as it hits 70c, it appears the other card is slightly more tolerant but not by a lot.

Is it temperature related or related to the overclocked cards

Have you tried running the clockspeeds at the nVidia reference after the BIOS update?

The well known fix for cards that do this is to set them to reference clocks, at these 650/800, they work flawlessly.

So they work at reference clocks? Thats wierd. Id definatly see what BFG have to say, whats the point paying extra for a pre overclocked model when they wont work in SLI?

Be better off with 2 standard cards then?

Will deal with it tomorrow when I have a day off from flying, I'm not that bothered about them not working at the desired clocks, with all the hassle these cards have given me it might be more trouble than its worth trying to get 2 new ones and find they are the same or worse.

Oh and if you want to do some more reading, there's a 30+ page long thread on nvnews about it, this isn't an isolated incident.
