7950 lovin and OC's thread

Pretty set on a 7950 now to FINALLY upgrade my incredibly old card.

My key concern though is noise - from what I can make out the 7950 seems a good balance of performance/noise, but I'm torn between various custom cooled versions:
HIS IceQ:

I like the look of this, can't find many reviews, but it should work nicely in my case (Silverston TJ08-e) which is apparently better set up for rear-blowing card fans

Sapphire 7950 OC:

Obviously a v popular card, but I know the fans will mean the air is going to mostly be blowing around the inside of my case rather than out the back. I can't find any comparison noise wise.

Any ideas which would be the better bet?

A 7950 for under £300 is a good deal. With my slightly odd Sapphire clocked to 1100/1350 I cannot tell the difference ingame between this and the 680 GTX that I was using before...

Can someone tell me what Mv they are using thats totally stable at 1050 clock speed?

Also - Do you sometimes get a screen flicker in windows when overclocking or applying overclocks?

Thanks, i think its a little too much for stock volts. I can do 1025 at 1.09v and 1075 at 1.15v, so trying to see what volts people do at 1050?

Yeah i ocasionally get a flicker in windows, just once, not sure why, maybe not enough volts or something, trying to determine if anyone else gets that on a rare ocasion?

I am running crossfire MSI 7950 Twin Frozr III by the way, hence not doing massive overclocks due to the heat on the top card.

Well, it's been a struggle not being silly and changing up to 7970's... but I am definitely going to be sticking with my Direct CU II 7950's.

I mean I can run happily at 1125 at 1.18V and temps stick around low 60's, while being quiet.

But I did get new motherboard and CPU... :(

I think you should change up to 7970's :-) i know someone who would probably have one of your 7950's off you ;)

Meh spoke to soon card is now crashing again. I cannot resume from standby without the driver stopping responding.. Also getting random freezes even when stock.

It's going back can't be bothered with the hassle

Sorry to hear.

Guess there's always going to be some bad cards though...

Just done a full complete fresh re-load just so I know it's the card. So far it seems to be ok again but when I install trixx I cannot unlock ULPS to enable overclocking ? Is there some kind of fix for this as it worked before. I'm using 12.3 drivers...

Only just got done installing new cooler and card as was busy and ill for the past week :(

It's pretty awesome at stock, because someone forgot about the bios switch and ran out of time to play this evening, do'h. It runs at 10% fan speed idle and so far in the one game I had a quick blast on, temps levelled off at 52c or so and never moved, still on 10% fan speed which I can't hear over other quiet case fans. Fan on 100% is nuts, as is the fan on the Antec watercooling jobby, the 920, wow that at 100% fan speed is the loudest thing I've ever heard in a computer so far. Again all but silent at lowest setting.

Goes to just under 1Ghz with the max allowed stock voltage change which is almost nothing. Will see how far it goes tomorrow, significantly faster than a 6950@6970 with an over overclock even with the 7950 at stock.

there are two files missing form many of the drivers that you need to disable ulps.

You can get them here

there are instructions included

Bah, I've had a quick look around, though not all the way through this thread, am I wrong in thinking that an Asus 7950 Top edition should have proper voltage control with Asus's gpu tweak? With the bios in position 2 I can enable a setting in gputweak that says "overclocking range enhancement" but other than making the bar longer, it still actually won't go beyond 1100Mhz(though it allows an offset of 900Mhz, the number in the box only moves to 1100Mhz then stops), but the gpu voltage won't go above 1.004v, which is giving 0.98v.

I'm still ill and got a headache to go with it tonight, is there some option I need to play around with in config like normal Afterburner, I'll install afterburner and have a go with Trixx later but, considering there is an image of gpu tweak on this cards product page on the Asus website showing a 1.3v/1200mhz+ clock I assume there is a way to enable it.

Does anyone know if memory voltage is changable on this card as well, again the product page suggests it does, though a couple reviews suggests it doesn't work on the 7950, had no luck with asus gpu tweak and memory voltage setting either so far.

Thanks, but the sapphire has been packed up and shipped off and replaced with a VTX 7970...

I did find out the problem though the wires going to one of the fans were damaged and this meant the fan kept stopping and starting. I imagine it was overheating when the fan stopped...
