7970 Artifacts - RMA?

Hello,

I'm running a 7970 Matrix Plat, on stock settings, factory overclock on the following system-

Win7 64bit
i7 4770K @ 4.2GHz +H100i
Asus Hero
8GB TeamGroup 2400
1TB Samsung HDD

Fresh install, 13.11 drivers.

I keep getting artifacts in BF4 and on Rift. Also had them on BF3 before. The load indicator on the card is a mixture of deep blue and purple but never red.

Here's an example I shot-

(After about 15mins of game play)

(Red flashing light causing them at the bottom of the screen)

I've had them worse than this too at some points.

Artifacts in Rift happen with water textures and some bushes/trees.

Am i looking at a faulty card? Temps get to around 75C with fans at 100%.

I get the same with BF4 using a 280x, lots of people seem to get the same, my mate has a 7970 Ghz edition 2nd hand he bought and he gets artifacts on BF4. I personally think the drivers are unstable, theres so many problems need fixing in BF4 i think the drivers from AMD are a massive issue to.

I dont get as many artifacts as i used to not sure why, im going wait till beta 9 comes out and if im still getting the same crap im going return the card. Im only wary of RMAing my toxic because theres so few around i could be waiting for ages for a replacement

That's why I'm so unsure about RMA'ing it, I don't want to send a non faulty card back to be without it X amount of time to be told it's fine. :-/.

I just don't think this card likes the stock clocks!

The red flashes may be the game as I get that on a gtx 670 and 7970 matrix.

I have been sorting out problems with my 7970 with ocuk customer services this week and Bailey helped me out. I figured that the matrix is one temperamental card and may not like other software interfering with it. Also the drivers were partly to blame in my case as one driver fixes the artifacts in one game but breaks another.

In my opinion the card only should be used with gpu tweak (which I can't stand) as afterburner caused me problems. In the end, it now works reasonably well.

So I decided to keep it. Also, make sure to restart your pc if you get a driver crash in any game. Like I said, very temperamental or maybe just mental.:D

Common problem with the 7970 matrix platinum because the factory OC is too high for a lot of the GPUs in them, but bad AMD beta drivers probably won't help either.

I rma'd my gigabyte 280xoc (same chip, not to ocuk mind you) after about 10 days and got an instant refund. Similar symptoms. I guess some of these chips just can't handle the stock settings. Shame as the 10 mins it would play bf4 I had great frame rates on ultra setting.

i used to have the same problem, i got 2 matrix in crossfire.
always use gpu-tweak and make sure you set both fans to65% 1 fan for gpu and other for memory. make sure when gpu-tweak is applied turn it off. can cause stuttering in games. let me know how you get on.

Same card, same problem. Unfortunate really, I planned to keep this card, now I have to go and find something else :)

I would return it, I know I am.

I've emailed the supplier with links to the video's. It doesn't artifact in benchmarks (3dMark, Heaven)... well it did once in Heaven. So I don't want them try fob me off when they "test" it.

I'll give Tweak another try, so your saying Daz... Use it to up my fans before playing, save, close Tweak then try again.

Hiya yeah no other gpu overclocking tool will work apart from gpu-tweak.
you will have 2 fan options make sure there both over 50% try 60% on both,
put loadline and power target full. will decrease heat. when all done close gpu-tweak down. the monitoring software causes stuttering in games.
only prob with these cards they dont like to go to 70c anything over 70c causes artifacts throttling and flashing graphics. was going to dsr the card but after tweaking and finding right settings these do fly. putting mine under water tomorow. let me know how you get on ;)
i play bf4 and rift as well and soon as i did above it was fine.

6600 standard.

I know that's an option that would probably work, but should I really accept the fact that's how my card will only run? Shouldn't it run at the advertised values?

Will probably have to run it like that though until the supplier get back to me.

True, but its a good way to test for gpu memory issues, you can than either run it at a lower speed or give the memory voltage a bump in msi ab

Worth keeping an eye in both vrm temps in gpu-z,click max so you can see how hot they get,too hot might cause artifacting, most I can manage is 1680 on some games and 1700mhz on others but I'm using different brand 7970 plus an accelero cooler

This one is an unstable GPU core, you make that go away by adding more volts

This one is unstable Memory, You might be able to fix that be adding more volts to the Memory.

If you have not overclocked this card then you can RMA it, if you have then reduce the clocks again or turn the volts up.
