7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

No, that won't be 24 gauge. Look's like 28 gauge, maybe 26 depending on shielding thickness. But you don't need 24 gauge for anything less than 25 feet.

Looks pretty thin and most of it's probably just shielding.

Well if you say there's no degradation over 8ft I'l believe you but if that's the case then why do companies like Monoprice still sell 10ft 24AWG DL DVI-D cables? Is this just for reassurance that good signal strength is maintained with high res/hz setups?

I've also grown fond of the thicker cable, looks a lot nicer.

Totally, time to get rid of the adaptor and put it towards another lightning ;)

The price is still lowered with OCUK, kinda gutted that I won't be picking another up at that price and I'm not sure how often these deals come round on the lightnings.

Thicker wire also helps with EMI heavy areas. I pass wires from my computer to display 25 feet through a wall with a lot of electrical interference, so I need the highest quality/thickest gauge cables I can get. For 8-feet that Monster cable should be fine.

Should be anytime now tbh, prototypes have been made so its just a matter of waiting.

Looks like it will be early next week when my cpu arrives, motherboard is here and its STUNNING :D

what motherboard you gone for. Going back to a 7970 lightning had a lot of coil whine with my 670 and sold it for more than i payed for it.

Sounds good can't wait to see your updated build log with the new MB :)

Person from 120hz.net is selling their original 2b Catleap from back when people were getting the 2b PCBs out of luck, for £300...This is cheaper than the extreme model and he's posting out of Newcastle so I wouldn't have to deal with customs but it seems too good to be true. He won't open the box although he has mentioned that he hasn't overclocked it as he was happy with the way it was. I've asked for pictures.

Can DSR be applied to this situation? or is this only with online retailers?

Went for a gigabyte x79-ud7 :)

I don't think dsr can be applied in this case unless the Guy is selling it on behalf of a retailer.

Looks like EK block delayed for a revision. I don't mind, best to get a perfect block. ETA late July.

Sounds like BS to me, I really don't see the logic in offering a 12GB (6GB effective) dual chip card before offering a 6GB (6GB effective) single chip card.

I believe the 'source' of the 12GB rumor is getting his/her facts wrong, seeing 6GB then thinking 'wow 2 x 6GB'.

If vega isn't struggling with 4 x 3GB cards at his resolution I really don't see why 12 or even 6GB for that matter is relevant. You'd run out of display connectors before that amount of vram would even be looked at.

I'm looking at this card http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=GX-297-SP for my system. What is the general feeling towards this card on this forum?

What are your reasons for looking at that card?

What's your budget, monitor setup and do you have plans for water cooling?

If I hadn't have found the Lightning I would have gone for the XFX being my second choice and third choice would have been waiting it out for the HIS X turbo.

I don't see many sapphire 7970's in the top ranks for benchmarking. Seen a mixture of the lightning, HIS, XFX and just reference 7970s.

I would have told you to go with the Lightning a week ago when it was £50 cheaper over at OCUK.

I have always used Sapphire tbh apart from my current card.

I only have a single monitor set up with 1920 x 1080 being the resolution. I don't plan on water cooling and as Sapphire tend to have good cooling this is my reasoning for going for this card.

I was looking at the lightening but in terms of performance is there much difference?

I don't know how well the sapphire keeps cool compared to the lightning. Have you tried finding a Sapphire HD 7970 thread on here? In terms of output the sapphire has a DL-DVI port unlike the Lightning so you wouldn't have to use an adapter.

An MSI rep in a Nvidia 680 Lightning thread last week talked about chip binning and how the best chips were put into Lightnings and the next best into ASUS DUII cards but I don't know where sapphire falls into all that and I know that's the 680 but my assumption is the same occurs with the 7970 series.

In terms of performance there won't be much difference because most people don't play games or do general stuff with max clocks. I game at 1175/1750 but so far I've gotten my card to 1320/1800 for benching and that's on air.

Find a dedicated Sapphire HD 7970 thread and wait for some more opinions in this one :)

Ok man thanks for you response, it's appreciated.

Sales talk imo, my 680 doesn't clock exceptionally.

Looks pretty though ^_^.
