7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

How you getting on buddy?

So far so good! Dont know what im aiming for though.

Remember to OC AMD cards you need to put the missing .dll file into AB's directory, perform the /XCL work around to unlock clocks and enable voltage control and monitoring in AB's settings.

Where do you get this .dll file from?

Popping my 'lightning extended family' head in here again!

Well, I was told this morning by EK that the 680 block has been designed but has still not been prototyped.

So this afternoon I'd had enough and ordered 2 of the aquacomputer 680ltg waterblocks instead.

I won't like the copper, but the csq is horrid anyway imo. Maybe I can paint the outer copper.. idk.

/leaves. XD

Thats some good news! I really should just ask to get the thread name changed to something like "Lightning Owners Thread". I'm not biased towards green or red and am very interested in how the 680 variant performs under water :)

I love the look of the aquacomputer blocks! How much did they sting you?

I'm not biased either. Got unlucky choosing the 580 for 3dvision on the benq, a few weeks before the 7970 released and spanked it. Then swapped to these as my 580 was just.. so irritating.

Hopefully I will see some decent improvement on my clocks. I can always adjust the voltage beyond the afterburner offset limit (via a memory editor) for a bench if I'm feeling brave. ;)

I really like the nickle plated aquacomputer blocks. They look the dogs imo. Just knew when I asked if they'd even consider doing a very limited run that they'd say no. :/. Ah well. I think they came to around ~£84 each. (euros..lol :/)

Thats not a bad price at all tbh.

Whats the voltage limit on the 680 LTG?

I'm going to do a little AUX voltage experimenting when I get back from my hols, the high end X79 boards (UD7, BBXII, RIVE, RIVF etc..) have optional power inputs to provide extra power to the PCIE slots for stability in CF/SLI, in my case I have a pair of sata power connectors for it, curious to see if it increases the overall AUX voltage readout. iirc it was something like 0.880v stock and 0.991v with +30mv applied.

A little, I found it didn't offer much, though I didn't really push any limits due to heat, I will be playing with it a little more once I get it under water in a few weeks.

I've also found out (I think) how to unlock voltages up to a whopping 1.8v!

The 'unlocked' LN2 bios is supposed to offer greater power delivery, though I didn't notice any changes in clockability between the two BIOS's.

The only stability changes I noticed with the card is with the reactor core thing removed, with it removed I couldn't touch OC's that I could with it on.

Under Air on a quick 3DMark11 run I will go to 1.28v as an absolute max, on water I will be heading to the cards current limit of 1.37v, though I have figured out (I think) how to take the card to 1.4v, which would be my absolute max on water, any higher I feel I would be looking at exotic cooling.

Anyone got their card under water yet with some OC results (cant find the question mark on this spanish keyboard lol).

ooo what PSU did you decide on?

Might stick with the 800D for now and get my loop re-built at the weekend.

got the seasonic x-850, should have no worries, ax1200i would have been a complete overkill and £100 more

going for a yellow/black theme now, new case, cpu and watercooling 2 weeks!!!

Nice, I've been eyeing up one of the 1KW+ Seasonic units myself to replace my HX1000W, prefer to have a single large rail.

Decided on a case? Its the one thing I can't decide on, do I stick it out with the 800D or go for something extravagant?

Got a 7970 arriving tomorrow just hope my Cooler Master GX650 psu can cope.

What 7970? A Lightning? A GX650 should cope, with a heavily clocked Lightning + heavy CPU clock you may be cutting it fine though.
