7970 Lightning, worth the premium?

Lol, after moaning about it on a daily basis you now say you dont need it a hurry

Youre not related to my girlfriend are you :D

Haha not that I know of!

I did need it urgently up until this weekend when I decided I want a new case, I'm not buying tubing/fluid now just to re-do the loop again in a few weeks.

Have a google for 'Phobya WacoolT Cube 1 Medium' and you'll see why it appeals to me as a nova 1080 radiator owner :)

I blame Cleee :o

Finally, a response!
Dear blah

Thank you for contacting us.

The block is being designed, but we have no free CNC machine to make a prototype on.

Hopefully the block will be released within 3-4 weeks.

But we will update the news section once we have more information.

Basically that's a couple of months away then -________________________-

At least.

Be optimistic, aim for before xmas.

The 680 block shouldn't be delayed as much as the 7970 versions, just as the 7970 version was to hit testing the 670/690 as well as the CSQ revamp came out, all the machines were put into use for making those blocks as a priority, the 7970 version also failed its first production unit test as they managed to miss two of the VRM's, so it had to be re-designed etc...we got it in the end, but it was a long haul.

Welcome to the elite club of Lightning owners

£360 is a good price! Gutted I don't have the funds for another right now :(

Not a bad deal at all considering it also comes with a free game. Will keep an eye on this thread for some tips on tweaking it. Whats a realistic clock to achieve with these cards?

Under air I would say 1200/1700 is a very realistic figure for a solid OC.

For benches (on air so far) I've had it up as high as 1300/1800 but for the voltages required I'll leave it until I'm under water :)

At least the free game isn't dirt/deus ex/nexuiz, I could do without any more spare copies of those games :p

Dont really have the patience for water cooling allthough, may look into it one day. Im still debating whether to get a board and build a socket 11 setup with a i7-3820 ive got lying around or just flog it. The 2600k im running is spot on.

Is it worth installing the Afterburner cd which is supplied with the card or get the latest from the site? Also which graphics card drivers are people using, the latest 12.8's or previous one's?

Install the latest which is 2.2.3, the one supplied on the disc is 2.1.x I think.

I'm on 12.8 WHQL, seems to be running fine, was previously on 12.6 and before that 12.4, had no issues on any of them tbh.

What ASIC did you get out of interest?

Probably the highest I've seen on a lightning tbh, 62.4% here :p

If ASIC theory is to be believed then higher = better OC on air, lower = better OC on water, though its been disproven a dozen times.

Do some extensive testing at stock to start with, a few people had issues with the card overheating at stock (poorly fitted cooler I'd guess). Once your happy starting at 1.2v core and working the core clock up is a good place to start. I need around 1.28v for 1300mhz core and 1.655v on the memory for 1800mhz memory.

When in Afterburner push the aux voltage to +30mv (feeds a higher voltage through the PCIE lane), power limit to +20%.

Remember to OC AMD cards you need to put the missing .dll file into AB's directory, perform the /XCL work around to unlock clocks and enable voltage control and monitoring in AB's settings.

The card looks a nice peice of kit. Definitely looks a lot more substantial than the Gigabyte Windforce I returned! Didn't realise you also get an Active displayport adapter included with the card, which is a nice touch .Card is idling at 28 degrees in a very warm room! Will test it further later tonight in BF3 to check load temps, and then take it from there.

Popping my 'lightning extended family' head in here again!

Well, I was told this morning by EK that the 680 block has been designed but has still not been prototyped.

So this afternoon I'd had enough and ordered 2 of the aquacomputer 680ltg waterblocks instead.

I won't like the copper, but the csq is horrid anyway imo. Maybe I can paint the outer copper.. idk.

/leaves. XD
