7970 vs 680 thread.

This is the worst thread I have read on the internet all week, and I was browsing /g/ earlier today...

Think about what you have done here people. :(

It's typically the way a thread goes when certain individuals are involved.

If you frequent the GD section of the forum you'll see it time and again with the same people.

The problem I see is the subjective vs objective points of view.

Many of us have stated quite neutrally what each card is capable of and agree in full with what they both do and it's completely down to user preference until a refresh is out or AMD respond, which will most likely be the 7990. Edit: even then that will be a proper enthusiast card that very few people will buy.

*shrugs* to me it's just another piece of technology I can appreciate and compare with the other products in the market. Some take that a little too seriously. :p

In my opinion it is time the mods cracked down on certain people, or atleast bring the sticky back we had at the last rattle throwing competition.

+1

We've had a long period of calm on here. Time to hand out a few bans and clear out the fanboys. Happens with nearly every new launch:rolleyes:

I got mine on day 1 for less than the cheapest 680 on here.
It's only a waste of money if you can't justify or afford it imo.

quite, I've been enjoying 7970 performance for months whilst others hold out for Kepler.

only fortune tellers get upset about IT kit being superseded a few months after release.

if I was buying today, I might go for a 680 (I still think 2gb will look a bad choice within the year) but I'm not buying today, I was buying 2 months ago and Kepler wasn't here then.

The guru 3D review surely shows the GTX680 giving the 7970 a thourough beating :D

Have you got ocd? The 680 beats 7970 mostly quite well at stock, and I dare say if the 680 released back in Jan and it was the 7970 just releasing now then that scenario would be reversed.

High res and overclocked that is not quite the case and they perform pretty closely, and seeing as most of us clock our stuff we should be looking at that fact.

*Edit * it appears my sarcasm meter may be broken.

mmm, so they're both good cards right??!! Honestly I really hope the average age of posters on this thread is 10 and I'm just a weird 30 year old nerd but considering the prices of these new cards it seems maturity is a long way off for some folk :(

The fact is these are both great cards and the choice for ME would come down to wether I wanted 3d vision or not rather than a couple of fps here or there! Considering I've just splashed out on a xl2420t and seeing Linus' review on youtube it seems the gtx680 is a great choice for a single card 3d vision setup :)

I have the same monitor too and slightly tempted by the 3D vision aspect. Although, there is a relatively cheap 7970 (300-350) and was wondering if to get that to upgrade my 470.

Agreed, both great cards

Don't know why people get so uptight over these things. Whoever gets either is going to be happy.

I was holding out for Kepler, but only cause I wanted a change to Nvidia after some time with AMD. Only reason I gave up in the end was pricing (As I was not going to pay £400+ per card) and the fact I got my cards at a really good price compered to others.

Plus I would have had extra expense of Nvidia's 3D TV Play, as I don't use an nvidia monitor for 3D.

Everyone should lighten up. Yes this may be an expensive round of GPU's, but performance per watt is great and both companies have great cards at the top.

So what if Nvidia's is a bit faster in most things?

I'm personally gonna wait a few weeks till the inevitable price drops then get a 680 as I've heard great things about the lightboost tech with 3d vision 2 which is one of the main reasons I bought the xl2420t over the xl2410-

Also, the mrs would kill me buying a £400 gpu literally within a couple of days of buying the monitor :D

@bhavv. Are you twelve or something? Either that or you're retarded. I've been reading all the posts the last week in Graphics Card section and you keep spewing out ******** about how the 680 beats the 7970 hands down and the 7970 is a waste of money.

We've all seen there's roughly a 5% difference across the board when they're clock for clock and some 680's are more expensive than 7970's and vice versa.

Where was you're precious Kepler 2/3 months ago when the vast majority of people needed/wanted to upgrade? I wouldn't be happy if I waited 2 months for something to beat the competition by such a small margin.

Why are you licking nVidia's ring? Free card? But in fairness, you're a biased idiot.

High res and overclocked that is not quite the case and they perform pretty closely

Not entirely correct. When both cards are overclocked, the GTX 680 still pulls off ahead. At higher resolutions the GTX 680 still pulls off ahead, just by a smaller margin than it does at 1080p.

The GTX 680 is still 'faster' in the vast majority of cases by definition of the word 'faster'. Even if it only comes out as 1% better, it can still be described as being 'faster'.

No overclock results are 100% guaranteed on every card, not many 7970s will go past 1100 Mhz to compare to a slightly overclocked GTX 680.

To tell everyone that they can buy a 7970 and expect it to reach 1250 Mhz in order to beat a GTX 680 is a lie.

Look through these reviews:

http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gtx-680-review/13

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...616-nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-2gb-review-12.html

Its no competition really, the GTX680 is definitely also cheaper, no one cares if one or two people managed to pick up a cheap 7970 from a dodgy random internet site, none of the major retailers, and most definitely OCUK who are the only companies prices we should be comparing on this forum have the 7970 priced under the GTX 680.

and the 7970 is a waste of money.

We've all seen there's roughly a 5% difference across the board when they're clock for clock and some 680's are more expensive than 7970's and vice versa.

The suggested retail price for the GTX680 is, and always should be less than a 7970. Offers and bargains come and go, not many places have cheaper 7970s, I've looked through every major etailer that I would buy from and the GTX680 is cheaper across the board.

Regarding the price, I have most certainly stated that BOTH the 7970 and GTX 680 are £100 too expensive, why do you think I am only defending Nvidia?

5% difference or 1% difference, if one card is consistently better than another in 99% of reviews, then yes its a faster card. Theres no arguing that, if one car is running at 69 MPH, and another one is running at 70 MPH, the second car is still faster than the first, even if the difference is only 1 MPH.

about how the 680 beats the 7970 hands down

Which it most definitely does in every out of the box comparison. What is wrong with stating that product A is consistently ahead speed wise compared to product B?

Would you and all the other AMD fans be going mad if I stated that the 7970 is faster than a GTX 580? Because it is, just like the GTX 680 is faster than a 7970. Its simple facts from analysing every review and comparison available.

Aww bless you, all that rage can be no good for such a young man.
