8 core coffeelake on Z370 ?

I think Intel will start making their CPU's backwards compatible at least 1 mobo generation. AMD and the AM4 platform are putting pressure on them to do this.

I doubt it, it was normal to have multiple generations of CPU on a motherboard until Intel abandoned this practice.

Didn’t one of the motherboard makers have Coffeelake working on Z270 and even Z170 showing the limitation was not a purely a technical one?

Keep the motherboard manufacturers happy by selling lots of boards and a nice revenue stream for Intels chipset division.

But then they are allowing AMD to make them look bad.

AMD have taken a look at Intel and with Ryzen brought to market a product that fills all the gaps in their product line.

An 8 core processor, cheaper, a backwards compatible socket in AM4.

These are things that are important to the customer.

But only to the small percentage of people that upgrade their CPUs which is not nearly large enough to base your production decisions on.
Intel are building for the large OEMs mainly not for enthusiasts.
The tail doesn't wag the dog. :)

Unless all the dogs have one tail to supply them with wags ;)

Fingers crossed, although 8700K works well on this board I still really want a 2 dimm ATX asrock board. :D

Iirc, when Z370 came out, tech folks were saying that there are extra pins for power delivery that aren't needed on the 6 cores that were most likely for bigger chips coming later.

Technically, this is wrong. The Z370 can sustain the power consumption of a heavily overclocked to 5.2 GHz and more 8700.
The 9700 could very well have lower power consumption. Actually even 65W variants.

seems they still carry the 8***k naming scheme

z390 boards to be considered a side grade- will pretty much be B360/H370 but unlocked and hopefully better VRM set up

It's Intel; we should never expect a motherboard to be compatible with any CPU beyond the generation it is launched with :(

Exactly. Intel take the P when it comes to chipset support. "You want a new Intel CPU? Sure...but you'll have to go buy a new motherboard too"

At least AMD have AM4 for 3-4 years.

The thing I find disturbing is that the Intel motherboards somehow look better than the AM4 motherboards.
More features rich and cheaper

If AMD keep doing well with Ryzen, Ryzen 2 etc... mobo makers will eventually start making motherboards that don't look cheap and nasty.
