Hi,
Building another NAS, and realised the 8 port card I have is too long when using so many additional HDD caddies.

I need, an 8 port Sata III card, in 8xPCI-E flavour.
No need to support RAID, just passthrough so I can use the NAS OS for RAID.

I am having difficulty finding a reasonably priced one as most support raid and therefore instantly cost 100+, or they come in 1xPCI-E and as such won't exactly have much speed.

Anyone know of anything?

IBM M1015 flashed to IT mode, very reliable and quite fast, flashing can be a bit tricky. Or if you don't need over 2tb support and Sata 3 then the LSI SAS3082E-R aka BR10i is a very cheap (Sub 30.00 sometimes) alternative and quite good as well, have those in my Freenas NASes with 2.5" 2tb drives (RAIDZ2 8 drives) and they're a dream. Flashing to IT mode is done in Windows and is literally a one min job.

will need over 2tb support.
That IBM one appears to be 134£ from a quick google. I can get an LSI 9261 8i for that sort of money (already got two).
Am I either missing something, or is it jsut that expensive?

I got mine for under 70 from the far east via a well known auction site and they are legit :) Yes good controller cards are expensive unfortunately.

With patience you can get good ones cheap. I got an HP P822 off ebay for about £150 delivered from the US including import duty.

You can directly attach 8 drives and the external ports allow another 16 (using shelves up to 227 drives!). Yes it's a raid controller but create a bunch of RAID 0 arrays from the single drives.

If hes running Freenas or similar even a JBOD configuration would'nt be ideal, you want pure IT mode for those setups without the controller having much say in between or doing any configuration to the drives. Nice card though!

I think I am going to be running OMV rather than freenas. Considering I will be adding single drives (6TB) at a time up to a total of 18 6TB drives.

Thanks for the help guys, it looks like all the suggestions are pretty much the same price as what I have found/previously bought. I have two LSI 9261 8i in my server already which I got for 115ish each.
Was really hoping there was an el cheapo purely passthrough card that someone had made, due to not needing any kind of hardware support for anything from the card.

Will jsut keep an eye on the auction site for something good, no rush since I don't have a single drive for the system for yet, just built it yesterday and realised my old rubbish 8 port card didn't fit. Got 12 on board ports on the ITX board so got quite a while to search :)

LSI 9211
Cheap and sata 3 speed.

What board are you going to get as this will be also a factor.

EDIT:
did not see the last post.
