Ive ordered a new 1080p projector.
Its one of the latest 1080p machines thats just been launched and is being highly touted as pretty special.
I plan on doing my usual pictorial/review possibly next week covering any questions you may have regards gaming in the follow typical configurations:

Most games as we know are 720p native, with a few like COD4 being slightly less. The majority of people im sure here will set their console to 1080 if indeed their display handles 1080 resolution. Games like GT5 or other so called 1080 games, do they really look any better and honestly is the difference much to get excited about? What im aiming at discovering is what are the best settings for each console, with a specific review regards gaming in particular on big screens. Is 1080p just marketing BS? or for instance do games in any way look better kept at 720p or up/down scaled.

Thankfully with projectors its easy to resize the screen. Therefore the test will be running screen sizes of 40"-80" to determine if it requires a particular screen size: viewing distance to notice any benifits if indeed any exist. All too often we read "oh you need 50 or more to notice 1080" but really lets find out....

Im lucky enough to still have my Panasonic AX100 projector (720p) and will be comparing PS3 and X360 on both machines to determine if indeed theirs much to shout about.
If youve any games in particular or comments youd like to see tackled in the report then let me know.

I would like to see games that blatantly don't have AA (like PGR3?) compared to games that do. Don't ask why... i don't have a very good reason.

Admiddedly on a projector it may be different (I dont have enough experience with personal pj's to know) but with general tv's and consumer devices imo look better displaying their natural resolution - so if you have a 1080p display there is little point in forcing a ps3 to 720p , yes you may get better frame rates etc but the image to me looks dirtier

I'll be interested to see your thoughts on the difference between 1080p and 720p on a projector too.

I currently have an 800x600 projector, blown up to 108".

Was planning on selling it, and replacing it with a 720p projector, as the 1080p ones are still a bit on the steep side.

Will be nice to see what difference you see.

Not only in games, but in bluray movies too :)

V1N.

mr latte, I will be watching this thread closley, you must be minted though :)

Minted? Its only £2000
Okay thats a lot but its not really compared to some HDTVs.
However it really is a lot of tech for the money and beats some £4000 1080p projectors like Sonys Pearl VW50 that appeared as recent as last year.

"Kill The Jaggies"
One of my own particular queries on testing will be with GT5 prolouge demo.
When viewing the cars in the showroom mode jaggies are clearly visible. True the PS3 seems to lack AA on a lot of titles. The question is do games benifit from any additional sharpness or reduction of jaggies when moving up to 1080p display and if so what screen size or distance is needed to make it worth the benifit.

What games or demos on PS3 are meant to be 1080 guys?
Any specific titles or parts within a game you want tested?

PS V1N
Their will be a seperate thread in "Home Cinema"
This will concentrate on SD and HD performance differences between the 720p and 1080p models
*Expect to see lots of photos of Cars and Die Hard 4 on Blu Ray along with a few others.....

You probably already know this, but GT5 Prologue Demo isn't 1080p native, it's a fair bit less.. not sure if there are many real 1080p games out there? Virtua Tennis perhaps?

You will not be disappointed with the PJ, my brother picked his up last week and comparing it to his AE900 the difference, if you look for it is pretty impressive, that's a 112" screen in a dedicated cinema room..

I'm considering one myself, just wondering how to fund it, my Z4 Sanyo is worth peanuts now, maybe if I see one of the kids?

only 2000? should have got two. :p

I have a 1024 x 768 projector, id be interested to see a real HD one, it looks great on the one I have set at 720p. I think I need a new bulb, I just cant be bothered getting one while the other still works. What happens to the bulbs do they just get dimmer or will they burn out like a normal light bulb ?

I game on a JVC HD1 at 1080p and PS3 and 360 games look wonderful. The Wii looks ropey as hell at 100"+, so, other than for bowling sessions with the lads (turning your entire wall into a bowling lane is awesome), that gets played on a 32" crt. As virtually all 360 and PS3 games are 720p native the extra res makes no diference. However, the better contrast, colours and black levels that come with the better 1080p models certainly does.

It'll be in Blu-ray and HDDVD that you really get to enjoy the difference 1080p brings.

Thanks, i agree that movies will show up the benifits much more. Its also worth pointing out that most of the differences will come from the abilities of the two individual projectors. Still im curious to see how jaggies are effected and if any additional sharpness is noticed.

The point of the excercise will help some owners to decide if its worth considering projection for gaming in 720 or 1080 form and indeed if they need or feel its worth spending so much on it.

Wow the JVC...
For me personally i need the short throw of the Panny and tbh dont think i would stretch the extra £1000 the JVC requires, or indeed a screen it deserves, even though its even more awesome than what im getting.

PC Gaming....
However if i decided to get back into PC gaming the AE2000 supports loads of different resolutions at various refresh rates via VGA of course 720 and 1080p via DVI-HDMI.
WIDE768 1280 x 768
WIDE768-2 1360 x 768
WIDE800 1280 x 800
WIDE900 1440 x 900
MXGA 1152 x 864
MXGA75 1152 x 864
SXGA60 1280 x 1024
SXGA60+ 1400 x 1050
1080p 50 & 60

all supported so getting a res and suitable framerate wouldnt be difficult...

Replacement bulbs are available for projectors, usually it works out about 20p an hour so thats the price of a small choccie bar per hour for bulb costs.

Warbie have you any screen shots youd like to share?

Also can anyone confirm if Drakes Fortune on PS3 is 1080p?

Does any 1080p HDTV owners notice any difference on their displays if they run 720 or 1080

*Perhaps PS3 will start seeing more 1080 res games come next year as coding improves?

Yeh, I never worry about bulbs. If you have to pay 200 quid every 2 or 3 years it's a small price to pay for having something better than the cinema in your living room :)

I think anyone who has the wall space should at least consider a projector, especially when you see the price that modern plasma and lcd panels go for. I felt a little cheated spending a grand on my plasma - i've never felt cheated with the projectors i've owned (which have varied from 2 to 3k in price). There are very capable HD projectors going for around 600 quid, even cheaper if you buy econd hand. As for gaming, you just have to look at something like Dead Rising on a huge screen - for it to look like you could almost step into the mall - to become a convert. In regards to the JVC, I choose this model for the black levels (which are as black as i've seen) and contrast, not the resolution. That's just gravy :)

Afraid not. I could take a few - but I was saving the shots untill the room is finished (the pj is still on a little table rather than ceiling mounted and i'm building a new Goo screen).

Shes understanding yeah, still shes getting a new kitchen and bathroom soon so can she complain, lol.
Hell i might even get her a dishwasher to play with.

I totally agree once you go Projection you cant turn back.
Just the other night i zoomed my screen down to about 50" for a mate and i said thats 50" their and he called BS so i got out the tape and he couldnt believe how small it looked to the still small in projection terms my 80" screen is.

Im limited to 80" or id go bigger but thats why i sit up really close. Fast action game are the most impressive and as you mentioned pretty decent 2nd hand Projectors will be doing the rounds for £350 up. For under £500 and £700 ish new you get some amazing little projectors that really changes gaming entirely..

I've a 42" 1080p LCD with 360 Elite set to 1080p and a SkyHD set to 1080i (both HDMI).

Re. 1080p over 720p if I'm honest I can't really see much difference over my old 32" LCD (1080i/720p). I don't have a PS3 or HD-DVD drive yet and I didn't get the Sky HD box until after the new TV but I will say that football and cricket on Sky HD are quite magnificent at 1080i.

PS The BBC are showing tonights match in HD on BBCHD which I think is a first for them. :)

Thanks on the comment.

Regarding games i think as mentioned earlier possibly with games that have no AA and of course game on the PS3 which may be 1080p or (kinda 1080p / pixel doubling cheats) are the ones that might benifit more with the increased res.

I hope, as many 1080p buyers will that eventually we will see more games arriving in 1080p native.
Either that or PC gaming may need re-looked at for my gaming visual feasts...

Now DX10 games like Crysis and the upcoming Alan Wake in 1920x1080 via a massive projection screen in 1080p could be entertaining indeed.

I know a few of the Sony games on the Playstation Store are in 1080p (fairly sure Super Stardust HD is). Dunno if they would be the best test though for what you are trying to achieve.
