Hi All,
I'm going to upgrade my 2nd PC which has an AMD FX 8320 running at stock and I want to keep this particular PC on a AMD platform.

I was thinking of upgrading to the Ryzen 5 1600, is this worth the speed increase from the 8320 or should I spend abit more on the higher clocked Ryzen CPU? I wont be doing any overclocking on this PC and will only be used for gaming.

The 1600 is a big step up from the 8320 and is probably the best value for money CPU around.

Thanks, on side note. A few days back from the US and AMD drops their price of Ryzen CPU's reading for Threadripper  Anyone know will this be reflected here in the UK too? As I might wait for a few weeks if another Ryzen price drop is coming.

1600 is good , but 1700 is better if you can afford. I was gonna go the 1600 route but couldn't wait. But now i think, its a proper upgrade from 4 cores to 8 :p

4 to 6 in my eyes would be like half measures :D

1600 is good value for money, depending on your budget going for the 1700 will give extra cores and a bit more future proofing. Mine plays BF1 at 1080p with the CPU at about 30% and the GPU at 100%. On the AMD stock cooler it gets to about 50c unless it is very warm in the room.

Either way you get the benefit of the faster better spec on the motherboards compared to your current machine.

Frankly the 'sweet spot' if you ask me for a gaming machine is an octa core cpu.

Even AMD's Raja said it in one of the talks on Ryzen. '8 cores is the new 4' I think is what he said. Of course that doesn't mean a 1600 isn't fantastic value for money but IF you can afford the extra get the 1700 and overclock it.

Depends budget, the 1700 is a great and in UK the price reflects the cuts. It goes for less than £300 weeks now.

Ofc you could wait for the Ryzen 9 (X399) lineup but you should be looking £500+ for the 10 core CPU.

Of bloody course he'd say that, he is trying to sell you 8 core CPUs.

if you have limited budget think about best possible gpu first. If this £100 can get you better gpu then 1600

Right now the 1600 and 1700 are very close in the vast vast majority of video games. If the extra £100 would allow for a better GPU upgrade (eg 1070 to 1080) then I'd definitely prioritise the GPU.

Whilst the extra two cores could help in future it might also be the case that when they do become useful for video gaming, the single threaded performance just isn't up to scratch anymore.

I agree on money being better spent on vga than cpu , if money is a problem!

But then would be not be best to overclock the cpu he currently has and just upgrade the cpu to a 1080 and save the money until the CPU really becomes a bottleneck?

I appreciate it really is game dependent on how the CPU is currently utilised.

I will be replacing the GPU too, it's currently 670's in SLI but i be going back to single GPU now.

It's a hooked to a 1080 monitor which is staying so I might get a GTX 1060 or something similar.

I went from an 8120 to a 1700, I was going to wait for the 1600 but I was in desperate need of an upgrade and could warrant the extra cost.

Ok, now it's getting tough. 1600 or 1700 but is the 1700 worth the extra £100 for gaming?
I would say no, but remember the AM4 platform is going to be around for two more generations, you could always go for the 1600 and you have a lot of upgrade options in the future, you could get a cheap 1700/1700x/1800x and then there is Zen2 and Zen3. At least that's how I'm justifying my purchase of the 1600 and I'm coming from a 8350

to me i changed my mind and thought no.
i originally bought the 1700 and while waiting for the mobo's to appear seemed like forever i sent it back got the 1600
and with the 120 saved i got a mobo of the MM, i'll get 8 or 10 cores with better ipc when the time comes. will be a while yet methinks..
