Above is the SMART info for my SSD.

Would a secure erase and reinstall fix this or should i RMA it?

The problem i am having is, when i start/restart the PC, it goes to desktop and then freezes for about 2 mins. I can open a explorer window but it is blank until the address bar goes fully green (searching).

It is on the latest firmware.

EDIT. It is a 840 Basic not EVO.

I would do the following

- backup all important data
- change sata port
- change sata cable
- make sure magician 4.6 is installed
- make sure on latest version of firmware (after installing magician 4.6)
- do a secure erase

I have issues with my 840 where it would suddenly disconnect itself from the PC for no reason (was a storage drive) and would crash my system.

turned out to be a faulty SSD so was replaced for a 850 evo as the 840 was at its end of life

Right. I have tried a different sata cable and port.

Samsung Magician says the drives health is good.

Nothing really needs backing up as it is only my system drive.

Will try a secure erase and reinstall later and see what happens. If still the same, RMA it.

Thanks for the help guys.

I had no issues with doing a rma on a 8 month old Samsung 840 evo. (not brought from OCUK)

sent it back, confirmed fault and sent out a 850 evo instead

Well that was a nightmare.

First off, secure erase would not work.

Then black screen on start from a fresh install of windows.

Now my dvd drive sounds like it wants to read a disc for a few minutes even though there is no disc in the drive.

Think this has been the worst re-install i have ever done.

Just to inform anyone who has the same problems.

The solutions for me, was.....

Had to remove my GPU and use onboard graphics to do the secure erase. (used parted magic)

For some reason i had both my 980 and Intel GPU showing as active in device manager.
Disabling the Inel GPU solved the black screen.

Just took the dvd drive out as i dont use it any more.

And more frustration.

ED209, could you tell me how you arranged your RMA please.

Tried registering with samsung and getting nowhere.

Tried submitting a RMA without registering and getting nowhere.

Telephoned them and getting nowhere.

Sorry for the ranting, but really feel like smashing this stupid SSD with a hammer.

Don't think i will bother buying Samsung again, no matter how good there products are .

how old is your drive? I did mine through the company (scan) I brought mine from not Samsung directly as I still had 4 months left of warranty.

Drive is about same age as yours. The company in Howden where i got mine said i have to go through Samsung as they only deal with returns in the first 28 days.

Pretty sure this is wrong, as a friend returned a faulty TV to them that was nearly a year old.

Have asked about helping me in their forums. so fingers eyes and toes crossed. :D

The retailer that sold it to you is obliged to take it back within 1 year of purchase if it goes faulty. Throw the book at them if they refuse. Telling you that they can only take it back in the first 28 days is total rubbish.

How the **** do you book a RMA with samsung.

Tried registering with them, only to find i have to verify my account. But still not got the email to do the verification.

Tried booking the RMA without doing the above but of course it fails.

Seriously getting peed off with this.
