85 year old woman mauled to death in her own garden

Dunno if this is helpful or not. The link below is a list of fatal dog attacks in the US over 10 years- quite a lot. Looking at that list, you can see a few breeds (pit bulls, especially) are involved in the majority of those attacks, though smaller dogs do crop up. I don't know how dog ownership by breed stacks up in the US, but this list shows that certain breeds are far more likely to inflict fatal injuries.

What really surprised me is people killed by packs of stray dogs in the US, I assumed that would be vanishingly rare- apparently not.
Seems that the majority are Pit Bulls. Are they particularly aggressive or do the owners intentionally work on the dogs behaviour?

Dunno. All you can really say is the majority of fatal attacks are pit bulls. Could be because they're aggressive, they inflict worse bites, there are a lot of them, or their owners are irresponsible in some way.

If one model of car was involved in 50% of all fatal accidents, i guess that would be cause for a safety review, assuming they weren't 50% of car ownership.

I don't know all the aspects but one point is that people want to/desire Pit Bulls. So why do they want to have Pit Bulls? Why not Collies for example? Or a Bedlington Terrier?
