8600 GTS pictured and benchmarked (sorry if old)

Any ideas if this 8600gts would be a worthy upgrade from a 7800gt? Or should i just wait for 8800gts 320mb price drops.

when are these 8800gts 320mb price drops expected?

Looks like I am going to have to join the LoadsaMoney parade and accept that ATI just got knocked out of the mid-range. More like a punch to the ovaries out of the mid-range really.

I think we need to define some things here.

Budget... up to £60 (?)
Mainstream... £60 to £100 (?)
Mid-range... £100 to £200 (?)
Performance... £200 to £250 (?)
Enthusiast... £250 and above (?)

I would definitely agree with that.

I usually just use something like this: -

Budget: Up to £100.
Mid-Range: £100-200.
High-End: £200 and above.

Works for me, but yours is a lot better IMO.

8600's etc... are delayed now as they've had to do a respin, sounds like they are joining ATi, as if they still release on the 17th April it will be soft launch (no cards available for months ala x1800), or they could move the date back for a proper hard launch when they have the cards. :)

i have to say im tempted by that, im on a 3200+ with my 7600GS running at 550/1550mhz and getting the scores in Sig. so to have that jump on my existing setup would be FANTASTIC! thats 6k near enough on '05!

Well not really as these cards aren't out yet.

I'm following this closely, I would like to see an 8600 "Ultra" part, maybe around 7900GTX speed but single slot and cool running.

Ok, "when they are out." ;) :p

Without getting into a heated discussion, this is why I ignore certain posts when I look through a thread. How can anyone dismiss all other cards in a price sector based on the "leaked" performance of an unreleased (and no release date given) card?

It's very hard to advise someone on what to purchase when you have others posting "Ignore all ATi cards, they are in trouble, nVidia will rule when G67109GTX-XX hits the shelves."

Some posters on this forum have started posting trash like that, please don't become one of them! :) :D

I disagree look at it like this a 7600 gt can be had for around
£60 so unless it's double the performance of that i dont think
it will sell well at all if they price it around the £130-£150 mark.
IMO the 8800 series is greatly overpriced with dx10 coming it's probably got less
than 6 months left being able to run games at max details high res very well
and still it's £400! a top end card shouldnt be more
than £150 let alone £300.But as long as mugs(and rich people) exist
they will set these crazy prices. If nobody paid £400 for a card what do you think would happen.

How is the 8800 series greatly overpriced?

I am usually the first to complain about pricing but the 8800GTS in particular is very competitive at the moment, especially considering that G80 is the only next-gen part on the market right now.

I'm not sure how anyone can call £190 "greatly ovepriced" for such a powerful card, sorry.

If that makes me a "mug" then so be it. I am usually a skint-flint with GPUs, and I say they're good value.

You have 22 posts and you are calling people who buy top end hardware on a overclocking enthusiast forum mugs for buying the latest tech?

I suggest you get a grip.

The 8800 GTS 320 MB card I have cost me 175 quid.I downgraded from a 8800 GTX after selling it at the right time. The 8800 GTS is a stop gap card and offers nothing but bang for buck.

Guess what?

I get the same 06 score with the 8800 GTS running 650/2000 as my stock 8800 GTX.

So to state that the 8800 is overpriced is nothing but BS.

I would actually use and test top end hardware before making posts that just make you come across as misinformed and rather silly.

what card do you use now?

How is saying paying £200 the price of a great processor and motherboard misinformed and silly? i think it's overpriced.Just my opinion and the term mug
is a little strong i guess if you are willing to pay that for what is essentially
a 6 month lifespan of running max detailed max aa games then be my guest.
£175 is still overpriced can get a decent board and cpu again for that.
A card should not be the price of the board and cpu combined ever.
Yes and the reason you downgraded is because you felt it was overpriced
for the performance you got or you would still have it correct?.
Your logic is hypercritical to say the least.

we are talking about a GPU not a cpu and mobo.

So where do you get this 6 month lifespan from?

I downgraded due to selling my GTX before the price drops. To make way for either R600 or 8900 GTX.

I have a EVGA so a step up to 8900 is on the horizon if I so choose.

You never answered my question?

200 on a 8800 GTS given the perfromance is a steal.

What are the options?

Spend 150 on a x1950 pro?

Please

You think the 8800 gts 320mb will be running quake wars and not to mention many other upcoming games maxed out think again.
I use a 7600 gt because it's the only fairly priced card out at the moment
bang for buck.I wouldnt throw money away spending £200 on a graphics card
ever.Your logic only stands up if you get lucky and are able to sell at a reasonable loss and constantly upgrade. How much will an 8800 gts be worth in 6 months? not very much i'd imagine.

Just as I thought.

A 7600 GT :D

Read my post again.

The stop gap 8800 GTS already plays stalker maxed. In fact when clocked I see no difference over the 8800 GTX at WS res.

The 7600 GT will not play any game maxed so I dont know what games you play or indeed what planet you are on.

BTW do you actually know how fast a 8800 series card is?

I'm guessing not :p

Computer_Kid said:
It's playing c&c 3 right now maxed depends on what res your talking.
The 8800 series is repulsively overpriced.

Your talking rubbish I know that.

You have no experience of the card you are calling too slow to play current games maxed.

And yet you have a 7600 GT.

How much did you pay for your 7600 GT?

100?
90?

what?

80 more gets a card 10 times faster.
Faster than X1950 XT :D

If you come out with comments like "repulsively overpriced" then back it up.

Of course you can't cause its just rubbish.

lol :D
