8700k @ 5ghz swap to 2700x?

Ice Lake is due about early 2020, not a couple of years, and we should have DDR5 at the same time.

Yes your correct, it is due in early 2020. Thing is though, it's not an a completely new architecture..................it's just another TIC. Intel now have to completely re-think the architecture of there cpu's. If as peeps are always saying on here, the most important sector of Intel's market is server and enterprise...........................just another TIC just is not good enough. Company's spending £M's on cpu's, cooling, electricity costs and of course security issues simply will simply walk away. They already are in droves.

Hey folks, need some advice.

I'm tempted to make the switch to AM4.

anyone done this? is it worth it? my 8700k sits happily at 5ghz at a push 5.1 all day long.
Not worth it. Just wait for zen 2 and make a decision then.

The best option is to wait March-April next year and then switch to the newly released AM4 with Ryzen 3000 series.
Will believe it when I see it.

H1 is all about server processors and Vega Instinct.

Personally not expecting Ryzen 3 until H2.

1 year cadence - Ryzen 1 was released on 2 March 2017, Ryzen 2 was released on 19 April 2018, there is no reason to believe there will be a delay with the Ryzen 3 launch.
I do hope the chips are in their final prelaunch phases and now can be released anytime.

hey all, yeah it's not for gaming, just multiple desktop applications/software. I was looking at the Threadripper, but it's out of my budget, seems like there isn't much of a benefit. 9900k is a disappointment.

any ideas if zen2 will be 10cores?

Until I actually see a lineup from AMD themselves everything at the moment is just rumour or speculation. Also releasing a 12 core cpu on a mainstream platform would mess up the Threadripper lineup. Not saying it won't happen but until I see actual fact then I will take everything with a pinch of salt.

Can't imagine what intels response would be to a mainstream 12core. Get the chiller ready boys

Threadripper is already at 32c 64t. Having desktop Ryzen 2 go to 16 cores and 7nm TR to 64 cores would make a lot of sense.

It would make sense from a security view and maybe if you could leverage 16 threads/need a big pool of cache.

Threadripper already has the 12 core 2920X and 16 core 2950X in the lineup. If AMD released that many cores on AM4 (Assuming they are cheaper than TR4) then why would anyone buy Threadripper ? The AM4 boards are cheaper so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense imo.
