If I make the move to a 8700k how much performance am I losing by sticking with my current 3200MHz ram over buying say 4000Mhz ram?

I only recently bought some 8 pack 3200Mhz ram for my Ryzen set up but it seems it is not capable of running at that speed using my 1700.

Also in terms of mobo do I get better chances in the overclock lottery by spending the extra £50 (so around £200 mobo) on a better mobo as opposed to a middle of the road one from about the £100-150 range?

What board do you recommend?

And finally.... what's a expected easily achieved overclock on the 8700k?

And it will play nice with the ram at XMP at the same time?

---

Internet seems to suggest there are minimum gains to be gained from faster memory on this platform over 3200MHz.

---

The other thing is presumably my Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz ram will work just fine with the Intel kit?

You testing the other ocean as well? I've just made the same move. There is minimal difference but the 8Pack RAM can push up that far (or so I've read). 3333c14 is certainly possible and I think c15 you can get 3600.
I opted for the cheapest ASUS board in Z370 flavour (£110) as I won't be going balls out with an overclock as the "closest" competitor can't even match the all core frequency.

I'm aiming 4.6-4.8 with Noctua DH15 which I'm told it should do without issues or delid.

Do you know if the 8 Pack ram will work in a Z370 mobo?

Almost everything else is listed as compatible except Z370.

I have the 8pack memory and works fine at xmp. Currently running my 8700k at 4700, on a noctua dh15. Could probably get it running faster, but fine with it as is for the moment.

What kind of voltage tinkering did you have to do to get it to that? I'm going to have a very light hearted attempt at getting higher this week and was aiming for about 4.7

I just altered the cpu volt to 1.28 not touched any others, however need to tweak further as I am sure I can get it lower. Will have another bash at the weekend.

Just to add, my idle temps are 50c, with load temps at 80c, so something amiss. Although it is rock solid will review at the weekend to try a bring the temps down.

Looking at the recent leaked review of a retail sample Ryzen 7 2700X on an X370 board,it seemed to be able to run RAM at 3200MHZ fine. It might be worth waiting until next week and seeing what reviews say.

I'm gonna wait of course for Ryzen 2700x to launch.

I just impulse bought the 8 Pack Ram as mine after 8 months decided it wasn't stable at 3066MHz anymore.

But then if it also cant handle the 8 Pack ram at DOCP whilst being overclocked then we'll that was the last straw.

Is the Z370 platform easy to overclock the cpu?

And ram overclocking is simple select xmp?

This is what I was told the 8 Pack ram would be like on my Ryzen. But alas not.

It works just fine at DOCP with CPU at stock but I've lost at least 200MHz maybe more from my overclock.

Not making the most of a 1080.

Sounds like you bought the Prime Z370?

So even with a budget focused board you are ok running your ram at xmp and running an overclock?

Pretty easy overclocking the 8700k, more so once delidded as thing runs silly hot thanks to the crap Intel uses inside with even mild bumps and under water. Until I delidded mine, it was ridiculous.

RAM overclocking is easier in that the memory controller is more capable and can push higher speeds. 3200 MHz is very straight forward on the 8700k and XMP will usually work fine. Only with the very high speeds kits you may need to manually tweak things, its just the bar is higher on z370 to tweak things compared to say Ryzen.

In regards to your Noctua cooler, should work fine without a mount. The LGA1151 socket uses for z370 is the same mounting wise as the LGA1150 socket which the NH-DH14 supports out the box.

Do people know if Noctua do a mounting kit for the NH-DH14?
I got in touch with Noctua to confirm that my NH-D14 would fit the 1151 (Z370) board and they said no extra kit was needed over the one supplied, which I can confirm was correct as mine fitted fine, just check the instructions that came with the cooler.

On another note I'm running my 8700k at a mere 4.5Ghz steady at 1.285v with the 8 pack 3200 memory at XMP with no issues whatsoever, temps at around 55° in games such as PUBG, Project Cars 2 and similar games which sometimes max the GPU.
