8800 shader clock tweaking

BIOS modding is a bit too hardcore for me - I just wish I could find a reliable way of software-overclocking the car and getting it to switch between 2D and 3D settings automatically - no joy at all so far, always stays on the 3D settings.

Mine is rock solid at 640/2000 for hours on end with stock cooling - which is nice :D

Didn't make much difference if any when I tried and certainly not worth loosing your warranty.

Hmm I've done it to my past two cards (6800nu and 7800gtx). Lowered the temps by a good few degrees. :)

My XFX 640mb GTS XXX edition has the shader clocked at 1500 as std.
I have the bios file if you want it, but have sent it to the well known site for all Nvidia bios files and it is available there. I have flashed two other cards with my bios without any problems. There are speed gains to be had from this :)

Got a link to that bios please bito ? also whats the core and mem speeds ?

Kezmo.....just do a google search on 'nvidia bios' and its the first link.(or check your mail ;)
The core/mem speeds are 550 and 900 respectively for the 640mb GTS version.
Remember to look for the XFX 640mb 8800gts XXX.

Shader clocks seem to make a decent difference ... as much as core and memory at least according to some reports (I cant link as it adverrtises, but to quote a Gainward vs XFX GTS comparison were the XFX had clocked shaders as well as core/mem, were the Gainward had clocked core/mem without shader increases):

Conclusion

Comparing the cards against each other sees XFX winning straight out on every benchmark. clocking those stream processors up to 1500MHz over the stock speed of 1200MHz really makes a difference.

The only downfall of this is that this seems to inhibit overclocking, but seeing as how the XFX card still beats out the Gainward Golden sample with 34Mhz lower core clock speed I don't think this is a huge issue.

Well the conclusion is (for me anyway) that 100mhz on the shader clock = aprox 100 marks in 3Dmark06 regardless of core & memory speed, the only down side is knowing how far to push it but tbh I'm sticking with 1500mhz on the shader as core & mem yield much better improvements :).

Will this work with a CD rewritable or DVD rewritable? as I wont be using a floppy as I have no floppy disks.

You really should use a floppy. Bios flashing is the only reason that i keep one. I used it when i soft voltmodded my 7600GT. It's happy running at 1.4V, and i got a higher OC out of it.

Gainward 8800gts overclocked speeds: 656/1007 shader at 1300
XFX 8800gts overclocked speeds: 620/1007 shader at 1500

Gainward call of duty 2 =58fps
XFX call of duty 2 = 74fps

3Dmark06 scores
Gainward = 10319
XFX = 10919

The XFX card still managed to outgun the Gainward card, even after having a lot higher clock speeds. The clocking up of the stream processors by XFX is really showing as the difference in performance between the cards

Wheres that from and whats the temps like ?

So if the shader clock speed was pushed too high, what would you notice? i.e. you know how you get tearing if the Core is too fast, what will the shader one show? Also, if it were pushed too far, if you clocked it back again would it be ok or would there be irreparabel damage?

It's taken from a review that i can't post a link to..As the review has links to ocuk competitors

There was No temps listed..

Plus i added the call of duty FPS
