8800GT 256mb Alpha Dog XXX Edition

Buying of a peep ?

And what RES do you want to ideally game at.

I aint sure on value as today just seen 1st reviews of the 256MB GT and price is $200 so not sure on £.

Whats a peep?

I game at anything thats playable on my X1800XT. Nothing higher than 1400x900 though

peep = person

256MB used to be classed as ok upto 1600x1200 and for 1600x1200 and above 512MB was Rec'd.

But games have moved on now and use more and more Vmem, so I would not run a 256MB card personally.

I would think you will be ok at that RES for a while.

Brand new. around £100, i could try and get £60 or £70 for my x1800xt with cooler which would make it quite a good deal.

I just dont want it to sound like a hoover in my room! (or break after a week)

1.6Ghz mem speed? thought it should be 1.8Ghz like the 512mb version? Would only get it if the price is closer to the HD3850pro otherwise would add the extra for the 512mb version.

*EDIT* if it's around £100 I'd go for it, it will still outperform 3850 with 256mb.

strange one place says -

256MB XFX 8800GT Alpha Dog XXX, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), 1950 MHz, GDDR3, GPU 670 MHz, 2 x DVI-I, HDCP, Fan

yet the one im looking at is 650mhz core 1600memory

Just for your reference currently X1900XTs are going for about 60-75 quid in the members market. You may struggle to get anything above 60 for your X1800XT.

Well it should be fine, but games are getting more and more texture-ridden and if you like AA+AF then I would get the 512mb.

You can always overclock the card but it's just that if you run out of memory for a game there's not much you can do about it.

I run at 1440x900 and don't think I'd settle for a 256mb, I tend to like some headroom when purchasing things.

is it worth me paying another £70 when im not that bothered about aa and af and will only be using till mid jan time.

In fact, i dont even know why I want a graphics card, i hardly play on games and crysis worked reasonably in medium/high settings. I just like finding cheaper than normal stuff really!

That case then no, it is still hard to find a 8800GT 512mb at reasonable price so if you can get the 256mb that cheap then go for it. You'll still see huge improvement in crysis at the res you're playing at.
