8GB Ram, 4GB usable ?

I still think that could be the onboard GPU has been re-enabled! :p

Hopefully you get this sorted, I need sleep!

lol, maybe.. and prob knowing my luck!

i need sleep too you know!, you started this with me, so you can finish it with me :D

haha, night dude

it will detect it but if its saying so much gb is usable in brackets then somethings wrong

if four sticks then two aren't accessible

you need to find out which sticks or slots are playing up,hence test each stick one at a time then each lot one at a time

can also be down to not enough dram voltage or cpu memory controller( might be cpu northbridge) on amd or simply reseating the sticks a few times might cure it

ive had this happen lots of times on x58 platform

Download a copy of Linux (e.g. Ubuntu) and boot up via USB/CD. There's a system monitor program that will show your memory. If it's 8gb there, it's clearly a Windows problem.

the bios will always be correct

if it says 4gb then theres something up with the memory or board

if 8gb is showing then its voltage or windows related

it is saying 8gb in bios.

what do i need to look for when changing the voltage on ram ?

also, windows says Hardware reserved "4gb", and i googled it and it says its something to do with bios.. like on board vga .

i have disabled on board vga, and enabled it, disabled it lol.. but dosnt change anything.

this is nuts man, i hate problems like this!

Can you boot into Linux and see if the problem's reproduced? If it's not, it instantly tells you the hardware and BIOS settings are ok.

i've also had this before, read lots of possible causes such as the ones mentioned here.
faulty ram, damaged cpu pin, overtightightend cpu cooler, reserved for onboard video etc. but i ended up replacing it in the end.

i'd try testing it with memtest as suggested, tedious job though :(

Ye, as it turned out it was my board. And it took 6gb of the 8gb I had with it lol.. bad times

Hey! Good news. As you know i sent my cpu back to amd. They tested it and it was the memory controler like teppic said. So now i have a replacment on its way.

I have to say after then2 weeks trying to get a rma number from them. They have picked up there game and got it sorted.

someone on here who had seen the trouble i went through lent me a Athlon 260 until i get mine back.

i need to send it back to him once mine arrives.

you know who you are!, all i know hes called Andy :D

Does the old bios setting of "PCI Memory Hole" still exist in modern bios's ? This is required to be enabled to allow windows to see all memory on my older (and current machine).

I don't know of such feature to be honest, and I know my motherboard bios dosnt have that because iv been through it a thousand times lol.

I have received my replacement chip now and its all working fine, I now have 8gb of ram :D

memory controller it was !
