8TB Drvies from Seagate coming soon. 20TB drives not that far off either

One fact I got from the meeting with Seagate on how a drive is built and how they work. If you were to think how small the block is on a platter to hold a small block of data and then were to unravel a 1tb platter it would be 73miles long. this is from a platter less than 3.5" wide.

here end my useless fact of the day.

Yeah, they need to freeze expanding the size and work on the quality...they seem to be getting worse year by year now.

Surely not as bad as Toshiba? I have the worst luck with Toshiba drives :(. Every other drive I've owned over the years has been fine apart from a couple of early Corsair and OCZ SSDs!

*chuckle* people use any excuse to reminisce about ancient hardware :p

Oh, and the HDD in my old Amiga 1200 started whirring after 15+ years (I believe it was a Seagate drive too :D).

Wow.
Any hints about pricing?
I would love a 20 gb.
I am into video recording/editing and my 2tb wd green is already full after less than 2 weeks.
That 20gb would be great for archiving stuff.

What kinda warranty would drives like 10tb be. I know i wouldnt want one unless it had 5+ years at a minimal. Preferably 10 year warranty as if it is hella expensive the drive then the warranty should match its longevity which should hopefully last at least 5+ years.

As soon as i know more about the 8TB drive I will let you all know. I will check on the warranty of this product and it will be a good indication of the warranty period for the 10 and 20TB drives.

Awesome, need these!

I already have 8tb of storage and my drives are nearly full! Well half of that is backup, so technically I have almost 4tb of data and almost 4tb of backup. :p

But don't you have to factor in the rebuild time, will it not increase as the size of the drive increases.

During that time if another goes bonk then are you not screwed. (in your array)

Aye, this is true, but it's still miles ahead of drive go pop=all data immediately lost.

how often have you (or anyone you know) lost two drives at the same time :)

I remember uninstalling Microsoft Works on Windows 3.11, then deleting all my mum's files, just so I could install and play Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

Think it was a 210MB hard drive!
