There are other arguments going as to the cause of the 9/11 attacks. I would be interested in a poll as to whether you think the US Government was caught napping or darker forces were at work.

Dons, could this be turned into a poll as I would be interested to gauge opinion on this ? If this thread in unneccesary and could be incorporated into another one then fine.

The US Government caught napping.

or

A conspiracy by the US Government and others.

A poll would be appreciated. Thank you.

Personally I think the American government were aware of it and allowed it to happen so they could, in the eyes of the American people 'legitimately' pursue avenues that they had no reason to beforehand.

If that were true, why go to such extreme measures? Why not just blow up a hotel with just 50 people in and blame the East? Why murder so many people in cold blood to pursue something that could be attained without an immediate loss of life.

In my opinion the US didn't organise the 'attacks', they got caught out and are embarassed, but why not reap the benefits now they're in reach?

if you want opinions on it then just look in the thread already there, no point making a whole other thread

He wants a poll so we can have a definitive count, can't you see that?

How could the American government be simultaneously so brilliant to have pulled off such a plot without any leaks, failures, confessions, etc even five years later yet so incompetent and inept to have completely and totally bungled its Near East policy? I seriously doubt failure in that part of the Asian continent was really part of the plan as it would be much more profitable to have complete control.

if you care about a number then fine, i certainly dont

Aren't you interested in seeing the proportion of members which think certain things? I do, and this is a lot easier and better presented than me going down with a notepad and making a tally.

Also, many users have opinions but can't be bothered to post their responses. Say for instance someone makes the perfect post reflecting their opinion they wont bother repeating it whereas here everyone gets to have a go.

You have an exceedingly good point, most people backing the conspiracy theories say that the government is a shambles AND an organised system capable of massive secret plans... I call BS.

Good thread Von

I am as shocked as you to find an amount of people weaving increasingly implausible alternate explanations of 9/11

I think its because its an internet forum TBH

hmmmm.... I don't think the US Government was caught napping. However, I do think it was an act of terrorism and not some elaborate conspiracy.

Neither - it's a result of America's bad foreign policy. It sticks its nose in where it isn't wanted and then one day people got sick of this and hit back.

I've had this conversation loads of times with friends. Why go to extreme measures? They didn't, I think they just simply allowed it to happen, they didn't plan it, just allowed it to take it's course and then used it as an excuse to get into other areas that wouldn't have had such public support (in the beginning).

I don't believe that the US organised the attacks, they simply used it as fuel.

Who says there has to be a plot. They simply did not act to stop it. You raise a valid point about the government being inept and incompetent, but to many people, when was it ever?

The price of losing the Towers and 3,000 innocent people is small compared to what would happen to the U.S. if they had no oil or were held to ransom for it by the muslim (Arab) countries.
O.K. I don`t think it was "planned" by the U.S.A. I think that they turned a blind eye and were just waiting for any excuse to gain a significant military presence in an oil rich area of the world.

When are you people going to realise just how crippled the U.S.A. will be if starved of oil?
They have to protect/prolong their lifeline that is oil from the Middle East.
To be honest this is just the start of it.
As the major global oil fields (which are all incidentally past their peek production outputs) dry up other superpowers will start flexing their muscles - CHINA for example and conflicts around the globe will escalate.

Grim but I hope that I am totally wrong.
