90's internet vs modern internet

I miss the good old IRC days but CBA to go back to it.

It is basically nostalgia. The web was pretty pants back then from the point of view of connection speeds and adware.

I used to like the fact that Yahoo's categories/submissions were reviewed by human beings. I suppose that would be nigh-on impossible these days but it was easy to find really good stuff and I browsed a LOT more personal home pages back then.

Actually, loads of people had their own personal webpages and sites back then. Nowadays, so many people have facebook that I suppose that's replaced them.

I miss that Microsoft gaming zone? (cant remember the name of it).
Used to play so many games on there... and then played Bridge when i was bored :)

Yup. I played a lot of AoE on Zone. :D

I much prefer the older days of the internet.

Mainly because it allowed me to differentiate between real life and computing better. There was more stigma, but essentially I played on the computer and then would turn it off and go and do something in "real life".

Nowadays EVERYONE is on the internet........all the time, be it facebook, twitter.....well thats about it. It's a mass communication tool.

Its gotten a lot better in a lot of ways, but fundementally I don't like it as much.

So which do you prefer?

- The days of angelfire websites, guestbooks, HTML chatrooms, Lycos/altavista, noisey modems

or

- Troll-culture, commercial websites, awesome web software, blogs, facebook etc...

I miss the old days tbh. Despite the limitations it was just basically more fun.

Troll culture was very much around during the 90s. It just wasn't so mainstream and more frowned upon because the user base of the internet was limited. I miss the old MSN IRC days, with split bots, script kiddies etc. The good old con/con aux/aux exploit against Win 98 users causing them to blue screen. It was the golden age imo.

So many stories and happy memories about those days.

Modern internet.

The best thing about the old days was that the common man hadn't discovered the internet yet. The level of technical proficiency required to use the internet meant the majority of people who did use it were all of a sub section of society, making it feel more welcoming.
Now days everyone and their dog is online.

Modern internet is so much more useful and diverse though.

I dont like how we know blurb on our friends via their updates and photos on facebook so when we meet in real life there isnt as much news and stuff to catch up on

I miss the atmosphere and the feeling that there was lots of new things to explore and learn.

However I much prefer the speeds and level of polish websites have now.

The modern internet is of course far better technically. But I miss the early days which were new and exciting. I first got online in 1997 playing Quake 2 on 56k dial up.

Quake? Please!

Everybody knows UT was where the real online gamers were at :p

This.

I miss UT, linked my laptop to my telly a little while back to play some UT but found that using a laptop keyboard and track pad a little hard to play!
Seemed a few people were still playing though which is good.

I liked the old internet, Lycos and Angelfire sites etc.

You could also find obscure pages that youd have no chance of finding now. I love google I really do. But it really has taken the inter out of interesting. :)

Agree with this 100%. I liked the fact it was only for people who knew what they were doing.

I'm guilty of it too though, being online all the time. I do think it's a shame - fortunately there's enough going on in the world the continue having conversations with friends/people. I don't get into a cold sweat when I'm on holiday and not online.
