SO I'm finally upgrading from my trusty 3770k, Z77 Sabertooth platform. Its been a good run I was lucky to get a golden chip that easily runs 4.7 GHz @ only 1.2v daily, but its finally time to upgrade I feel. I mostly game so that's my main focus. I waited for the 3700x review embargo to be lifted before I made and change, as much as I admire AMD's push I still feel a little disappointed in the 3700x when it comes to gaming. Sure it performs great but it seems as though the 9700K still is on top in gaming? I'm going to bide my time and wait to see what the better binned 3700X (3800X) brings. Do I take the chance and hope then the third gen of zen brings even more amazing performance or do I go with the 9700K and accept a limited upgrade path?

seems ryzen 3700x max OC 4.4 all core with intel at 5ghz from reviews .

If your rocking a 144hz 1080p screen or wanting max fos with 1440p 144hz gaming screen then would grab intel . Any 'binned' 3800x would naturally end up in flagship 3950x chips . AMD hasnt been shy stating Higher end CPUs at the best CCX chiplets .

both or limited upgrade paths. DDR5 sorted that out, Zen4 is DDR5 and way AMD is pushing, specially on data centers- the move will come 2021 . It not just datacenteres driving move from PCIe 4.0 onto mainstream at the same time but staying a step ahead on Intel.
Intel have their 10 core most likely end of year but on new chipset/socket with 10nm following in 2020 . seems it'll be like z370 and z390 style of launch and keep with intels two Gens to one socket approach

Even though thats entry z390 board, still higher design in terms of VRM then the MSI B450 .

Many of the test games have been written on Intel CPUs.
That's changing now and next-gen consoles having Zen2 based CPU is going to make game developers write lot more AMD favouring code.

Also with ever increasing amount of background bloat 9700K's lack of extra threads is handicap in future.
I mean if you had bought HT-less 3670K instead of 3770K you would no doubt have had more game experience hindering hiccups.

Really better to not wait 10nm for desktop until 2021.
https://tweakers.net/nieuws/151984/...l-in-2021-nog-desktop-cpus-op-14nm-maakt.html
Though starting to look more and more that it's so bad clocker that they'll want to skip it completely on desktop.
Unless also their 7nm turns out to be equally FUBAR.

Yea I have noticed that there is not much separating Intel and AMD cost wise, I was actually eying up the Aorus Z390 Ultra or the Asrock Z390 Phantom gaming 7 or the ROG STRIX X470-F for AMD as it has a fairly decent vrm for the price. I am an FPS player yes and I do like to saturate 144+

I would expect that upgrading your cpu would produce marginal gains. You already have a decent cpu. You sold be better off just upgrading the gpu.

Im still using a Gigabyte gtx 980 ti xtreme and I had planned on selling off my older mobo cpu ram ssd and gpu to get an rtx super

@EsaT

think thats the thing with Intel that is grating .

the speed of which they have been able to add cores and release soon after Ryzen chips . gone from 4 cores to 6 , 8 and soon 10 in very little time, yet the looooonged out 4 cores.... they could have done this 3 years ago and in theory ryzen wouldn't of had a leg to stand on at launch ...

I have a feeling their first 10nm will be like Ryzen 1st gen! GREAT... but worth waiting for second design tweak and manufacturing to mature

@Uaon Gigabte/Aorus have the best Z390 hands down . asus were poor . z390 Aorus Elite, Pro and Ultra are the SAME board, just differ slightl but VRM is the same

x570 aorus boards are better staggered . save yourself cash and grab z390 elite but Pro Wifi is going for £150 !!! which is a steal with wifi !

and yeah, ou'll be pusing 9700k at 1080p !

this is 3800x vs 9900k - both samsung b-die memory running 3600 hz. I've only listed 3200hz for the B450 board. his testing was using AUTO OC for ryzen and intel . also used a £700 x570 board lol

Yep this is what helped me make the decision, I mainly game so the 9700k is the way to go. This is what I'm ordering;( when I sell off my old gear I will put the money towards an RTX 2070 super

Ive had a 4770k on a Asus z97 Deluxe for my main rig for years but I think a 3700x or the 3900x on a x470 board is the way im leaning now.
Upgrade itch hurts.
