Hi all

I recently recived an eVGA 9800gtx+ as a warrenty rma replacement for my 8800gts320mb. I just got round to installing it, however I have a problem. When I boot up, nothing shows on the monitor (not even the boot display), absolutely nothing. The GPU fan runs at 100% constantly. When I replace the 9800GTX with an 8600GT it works flawlessly.

I've connected all the required power connecters for the hard and everything is plugged in correctly. What could it be?

My specs

Intel Q6600
EVGA 650I ultra
2gb ddr ram
9800GTX
530W PSU

Cheers

After a quick search you may want to update the bios of the motherboard as some people have experienced issues with 9800gtx cards before updating to the latest bios revision.

I hope that helps :)

Edit: On another note could you please post the brand and model of the PSU as that maybe causing a problem :)

I dun have the same card but one thing is my board is pretty old. I don't think there are BIOS update for itanymore. Anyone know if i am going to get similar problems if i say go for a 5870?

I've updated my bios to the latest version. Still happens :(

My PSU

Hiper Type M 530W

Well I'm no expert with NVIDIA cards but surely that power supply is good enough for a single card, I would have thought so anyway, unless of course it is a tat power supply.

Could you try the 9800Gtx+ in another machine? Just to eliminate that the card isn't faulty? I'm sure someone will be along to help out with a bit more experience with your card/power supply setup,

good luck,
J.

I have no other machines to try it in. Hmm I'm just wondering if this card could be a dud. But what are the chances of a brand new replacement card being faulty?

I agree with bridder the PSU should be capable and since you say the bios is upto date then i would also suggest trying the card in another PC just to be sure...

There is nothing more i can suggest sory :(

It's not unheard of for NVIDIA or ATi, it happens but **** that's bad luck

Just chucking some thoughts out here but are you using adapters for your power to the card? If you are perhaps switch some of the molex connectors around(they are crap connectors).

Try reseating the card.

Are you heavily laden with other hardware, like 4TB hard drives and two optical etc, disconnect as much as is possible to get it to boot.

When fitting did you knock something?

just some random thoughts re what could be wrong,

once again,
good luck,
J.

ps. When you boot do you get anything and then when it goes into windows you have a blank screen as I have just been reading about problems with blank screens and the 190 or 191 drivers, apparently slipping back to the 186 driver set fixes this....

Bit random these links are but the guy in the first link is having blank screens with a 600watt power supply that only supplies 18A on the 12V rail.

http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/822120-blank-screen-upon-boot-9800gtx.html#post6660067

Then there is this post from the NVIDIA forums where someone states that 24A are required for the 9800Gtx+ on the 12V rail...

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=73249

Tried looking for your power supply specs and could not find immediately, whilst it could be the power supply a 530W should suffice. You could really do with checking it in another machine as it could be the card, I know you don't have access to one just now but maybe a mates tomorrow?

Out of ideas now, so sorry as it must be really frustrating. PCs are a pain in the backside when everything is working nevermind when something is foobar...

If i'm reading the specs right from here - http://www.corsair.com/products/vx/default.aspx - the 450W gives 33A and the 550W gives up to 41A on the 12 volt rail, plenty. I really can't recommend enough though getting the card tested either in another machine or by sending back to eVGA as it really could be the card that is foobar, you could spend on the power supply only to get bitten anyway, doubling up your bill....

This bundled system here from OcUk - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-198-OK&tool=5 - uses the Corsair 450W power supply and has a Geforce GTS250 1024MB card in it, as far as I am aware the GTS250 is a rebadged 9800Gtx+ so I would say yes the Corsair would be fine for powering your card, I do wish a NVIDIA dude/member would pop in here though as I am stepping out of my comfort zone here, I would hate you to buy the damn power supply and be in exactly the same position.

Just as an aside, the Corsair power supplies have nothing but good comments throughout the forum, very good power supplies by all accounts. If you wanted to SLI at a later stage you might want to get the 650W but this is entirely a question for you and the direction you see yourself going in down the road...

Hopefully another member can reaffirm my thinking or offer better advice soon but whatever you do, good luck and let us know how you go on,

all the best,
J.

Well the 1GB Inno3D 9800GT that's in my rig is run on a 400W PSU so I'd doubt it was the PSU unless the 9800GTX is a much much more powerful card?

I have a similar system which pulls 280W idle and the maximum all time high was 586W from the wall. However that figure includes my 40" LCD 90-135W, Router and 5.1 logitech speakers. Your current PSU should at least let you boot your PC.

Thanks for the replies guys

I've tried contacting EVGA all day (Europe support where I got my RMA) and the phone just rings and rings but no one picks up.

I think I'll give them an email and see what they say.

Btw I've tried running just my motherboard, cpu, ram and graphics card with nothing else plugged in and it still doesn't boot. :(

Sorry to ressurect an old thread.

I have tested the card in another machine and it works, I have now changed my powersupply to a more powerful one (Corsair VX550 41A on the 12V rail) and it still doesn't work. :(

What could it be?

Im thinking motherboard:(

didn't even know graphics could be incompatible with motherboards.

Does the computer actaully boot into the Operating system? maybe the monitor just not able to pick up the signal?

Since your 88Gts went foobar (and you received this replacement) has any video card worked in your system? I'm wondering if you have a problem your motherboard/pcie slot or something, can you get a video card, any video card and try it in your machine to see if you can boot?
