Hi all,

Title says it all, I have a 920 @ 4ghz at the moment.

What is the performance gain line with a 980x at 4.2+?

Is it worth the cash?

Not worth it unless you need (i.e. make money from) heavily threaded programs. And e-penis extension. Are you deficient down below? :p

If a few hundred quid was pocket change to me.. i'd get it. However, in cold hard reality you'd never see the difference in games and unless it actually helped your productivity and saved time/made money i could never justify it :D

its a fantastic chip exergy...... i had a i7 920 previously and changed it to i7 980x to me it just feels so quick....i got mine at 4.6ghz with the ram at 1925mhz and it eats everything...you can get one for £599 now also brand new

£600 vs a £150 chip for gaming and the difference is negligible....plus the p55 mobo's are roughly £50 cheaper too

Wouldn't the i7 920/980x be more future proof comparing to the i5? as surely soon new games will stress the cpu more..

and isn't games like WoW cpu dependent so the i7 could help a lot?

I doubt it, are there any games that support HyperThreading? Don't think so.

The 1366 has certain advantages over 1156 though. It's up to you really, what would the total cost difference be?

I'd rather be more future proof and have 6GB memory (cheap as chips these days), a CPU capable of higher overclocks (mind you, only slightly), a chipset that supports 16x/16x multi-gpu solutions and HT that although not helpful in gaming performance, might be of use in other applications. Plus the resale value is higher :)

TBH it would be much more future proof to keep the extra £500 in you back pocket and spend it on an entirely new system when the i7 920 can't keep up any more (it will be some time).

my i7 920 ran at 4 ghz.....my i7 980x runs at 4.6 - 4.7ghz so 600-700 mhz is a fair improvement couple that with the extra 2 cores and lower temps plus the completely unlocked bios settings of an extreme edition. thats the plus points for me and although the 920 is the best bang for buck chip probably ever im very happy with my upgrade to 980x and would do it again as it is a good bit quicker

Hmm...., well I don't people should be "critisized" for buying a 980X if they have the money, its not a crime (even if the price is!) Thread title didn't mention gaming though:)

My QX9650 wasn't anywhere near as fast as my 980X - wether apps OR games (testing with same GFX card (that was clocked at 4ghz) so although this doesn't make the QX9650 slow by any stretch of the word, it means my 980x is so much faster, and more furure proof.

PC's, like the humam body require a good overall "flow" to work effecianetly. A weak heart (CPU) with strong back (GFX) is little benefit for example, and slow-bad memory/Mobo etc also contribute to poor performance. I had a QX9650, but on a striker II formula mobo, and "old" ram. A balanced system is the key, not just a high end CPU;)

Ant

a good gfx card is optional where as if you have a good cpu then good ram and mobo are not for decent performance...thats all antx777 is saying
and yeah the price is a crime but ferraris dont come cheap and with this chip i was able to push my ram a good bit harder than i could with my 920
