9900ks good enough for a 3090?

If you call 1fps a difference between the 3600X and 5600X and besides the 9900K is faster than a 3600X so what we talking 0.3fps difference maybe?

Knock 15%~ off for the 9900K vs 5800X. The difference between the 3080 an 3090 is about 10%

So the real question is the performance difference between two systems. 5800X 3080/6800XT vs 9900K and 3090. Referenced against cost.

The 15% is only at 1080P though, at 4K which OP games at both the 9900K and 5800X perform the same so a 9900K with a 3090 would still be 10% faster than a 5800X and a 3080.

Even a 10400F with a 3090@4K would beat a 5950X with a 3080 at the same resolution.

The video you linked is not legit it's just some guy making up the numbers. Hardware unboxed on the other hand do rigorous testing and offer a proper comparison.

It’s no secret the 5800X is faster than the 9900K in gaming.

From the research I've done, my understanding is that at 4k everything is so heavily weighted on the GPU, that a slower or faster CPU will make literally no difference.. If I was playing CS:GO at 1080p, I might see my FPS go up or down by 100-200FPS or whatever, but at 4k - I won't notice anything.

The reason I got a 3090, is that I managed to get one at close to MSRP back in December, so it was a good buy at the time.

That is true but just not in games at 4K atleast not yet with the Gpus currently available, maybe when we get to the RTX5000 series you'd notice a difference.

4K isn’t really much of a problem for today’s cards.

If you look at most benchmarks, the difference at 1080p with a game like CS:GO between a slow CPU and a fast CPU, the difference might be like 100-200fps,... As a game like that will do up to 650FPS.

However, looking at 4k benchmarks (where I can find them) the difference between a fast CPU like a 5950x and everything else, seems to be like 1-2fps at max in almost all games.

My understanding for this, is that because the GPU has to render each frame at 4k, it has so much to do in terms of raw texture fill-rate, everything else is slowed down to the point where the CPU simply isn't being taxed much.

It’s true at all resolutions, less pronounced in some games sure, but the performance is higher especially the minimum frame rate.

I don’t think you’re in bad shape with the 9900K, but you are leaving performance on the table compared to a 5950X say that will push the 3090 to its max in every scenario.

The issue is somewhat compounded by the tiny performance difference between the 3080 and 3090.

In most games Intel CPUs actually perform better than AMD at 4K albeit by 1-2 fps.

Thing is, if I play a game like BF5 at 4k, with RTX on, on ultra - my CPU is at about 50-60%, but the GPU is absolutely pinned at 100%, giving 100-120fps. So I'm not sure how I could get anything else out of the GPU, it looks like it's operating at maximum speed?

I think that's spot on, with the 4k cards like a 3090 or 3080, upgrading your cpu from a Core i9 9900k will not give you any real fps gains. You're better off overclocking the cpu to 5Ghz and that will give you a nice performance boost.

OP also think about getting some fast 4000 Mhz DDR4 RAM from OcUK, will help with smother gameplay.
