9900ks good enough for a 3090?

I think that's spot on, with the 4k cards like a 3090 or 3080, upgrading your cpu from a Core i9 9900k will not give you any real fps gains. You're better off overclocking the cpu to 5Ghz and that will give you a nice performance boost.

OP also think about getting some fast 4000 Mhz DDR4 RAM from OcUK, will help with smother gameplay.

It's a KS so it turbos to 5 ghz already ;)

To be quite honest I am considering switching to Alder Lake myself.

there are several reason.

Even though I liked my 3950x, I've had lots of issues with the 5950x, issues with x570 boards and system instability.

I ended up having to run my RAM at stock to get rid of most system instability issues with the 5950x and X570 continues to have issues with USB.

I never had problems with my boards, ports, ram or stability when I was with Intel. Even if I lost a little performance in games, at this point I value not having issues so much more than 5% performance

Do you think that your stability issues are somewhat unique to your build rather than being a symptom of the x570 platform...? I have read an odd post or two noting issues with their USB connections when using those boards. IIRC one was related to using their USB port connected to their VR headset.
I have been used to over two years worth of very steady and rock solid performance from my otherwise toasty 5Ghz 9900k and Z390 board. That is something that I have grown to expect and enjoy.

Ok, how much did it cost you?

It is the OP who has the KS if I have read correctly.

My 9900k only runs at 5Ghz all core due to being overclocked manually. The KS is running as std at that speed.

That is a fast processor! It turbos on all cores to 5GHz normally! Wow

Yeah just overclock it and overclock your ram
This. You don't have to go mad with the overclock but there are tangible gains to be had doing a straightforward overclock of your CPU and tightening the timings of your DDR4.

Though it is more of a case that you are leaving untapped performance in the table rather than it being needed for your 3090 at 4k.
