A battlefield2 thread

where is this cache you are speaking of? My machine was running it fine on medium but has been stuttering slightly lately.

From Tweakguides:

Clearing Shader Optimizations: When you change the graphical settings or install a new patch, BF2 attempts to optimize the shaders used in the game for the best performance on your particular hardware. These optimized files are stored in your \Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache\ directory. If you've changed your settings several times, I recommend you finalize your changes, close BF2, go to the above directory and delete everything under the \cache\ directory. The next time you start the game and play single or multiplayer, your shaders will be optimized again. Close BF2 one more time, defragment your hard drive, and now things should be much smoother and load much faster the next time you go to play BF2.

Thanks, weeble.. i'm gonna try that! :D

I've changed my settings around 3 times (getting best settings for X1900XT ;))
What settings are is that? I used to use max detail on x800@16 pipes 550, now using 4xAA 8xAF IIRC (if not 16xAF), 1280*1024.

Sorry just looked again there is an option for texture quality, I have it on high. U could use driver control instead and there is also the option of turning quality settings to 4 if u look in the profile folders in my documents.

Tried deleting all the cache, then reinstalling the full version of 1.3. Still laggy as hell, and totally unplayable. It's so frustrating :(

I have the same problem but since a h/w upgrade, only changes:

- new Netgear wireless G PCI card
- 7950GX2
- ASUS bios update
- resolution up'd to 1600x1200 @ High 2x AA

I think its the new wireless card thou - doesnt seem to get as good a signal as my old one.

I have a wired connection to my wireless router and a wireless to a laptop, the network is ridiculously slow, but downloading from laptop is not effected as far as I have seen. Difference between network transfer is it used to take 5min for 700Mb now it takes 40min at best.

Have you got 2gig of RAM mate? thats a must.

No its not, i got 1 gig, have it at 1280x1024 med settings apart from terrain texture (at high) and 2x aa and its fine, no choppyness, I admit it does use around 600-700meg ram which is a lot.

Try closing all non vital applications, even end the process explorer.exe
msn messenger is a ram killer too, msn 8 use's around 4-50meg here.

At 1280x1024 with everything high, 8xAA and 16xAF my usage hits 1.25GB which causes paging with 1Gb of RAM but runs nice and smooth with 2GB.

It doesnt ever need more then 1.5gb I think and on medium 1gb is enough but it'll be jerky at the start for much longer. I think min memory used even on low is 700 odd.

defrag on the hd can only help and I used to put the game on a seperate drive to windows and the swapfile before i got more then 1gb

type this into the console

renderer.drawFps1

and that will bring your FPS up

if it starts dropping below 40, then your graphics card is lagging, if it stays well above that, then its your net connection thats at fault.

sub 40fps cant be described as jerky, sub 30 maybe and for me 25 or above is still ok.
That fps counter wont show lag due to disk access, it just shows if the gfx can cut it or not, the fraps one is good because it turns red when it drops below 25fps and green otherwise

I think this game has just really annoyed me but maybe someone can confirm that.

I have been playing Special Forces tonight for a bit and won my Veteran Sniper closely followed by Veteran Sniper Specialist (the special forces equiv).

Now Bf2s has updated I don't have either of them

I played to the end of the round (got 72 points) and a new map started, where are my badges!

I have already not been awarded my basic pistol I got yesterday, I'm getting fed up with this game.
