A beginners first build...

You can install either version of win 7 with the key??

Also, with 32bit and gaming you are not getting full benefit of your system as it can't access all your ram so you are actually limiting yourself.

FSX is only using about 1.5 gigs of my ram though, but if it does start to slow i will upgrade.

Now watercool it! Get another monitor too. :D

I'd love to but i have absolutley no money left now :(

Anyway, here is the video i promised...

An Update

Hi everyone

Merry Christmas!

Well, i've been using this rig for what seems ages now lol. It has been amazing and nothing has gone wrong either which is nice, touch wood :D

I've just ordered a few more things with my christmas money...

I've ordered...

A Thermaltake Frio CPU cooler
Some Arctic Silver 5 TIM
Some ArctiClean TIM Remover And Surface Purifier
An Akasa Internal Media Card Reader

Gonna get my CPU cooler and try over clocking it a little further. Also the card reader will be great for my camera!

Pics when it all comes :D

Oh, i also bought some sound sensitive red cold cathodes from somewhere else as OCUK don't sell them unfortunately.

Never seen this thread and i fancied a read of it cause i havent seen many spec me a rig thread reach nearly 10 pages. Im really glad it worked out great for you, on the first few pages it was like omg dont buy that dont do it. But you came out armed with good knowledge and open mindedness and got yourself a good rig. Not to mention a nice overclock, what are you hoping to get it too with the new cpu cooler you bought?

Thank you very much for the nice comment.

Well, at the moment, i have it at 3.60GHz on the stock cooler which i think is pretty good and it hasn't crashed once yet!

With the new cooler, as it is big, i am using push/pull fans and i am going to use arctic freezer 5, i am hoping to get it to around 4.0GHz.

We'll see what happens though:D

I had my 965 up to 3.8 using a multiplier of 19 and voltage of 1.425 I believe, that chip should easily get there mate. I think past 3.8 though it disables coolnquiet, but I may be wrong

PS well done on the build pal. Did you swap to 64 bit yet?

Sounds good, hopefully i can get it further than 3.8 though. And no, i haven't got 64bit yet, but that is definatley next on my list!

Say what? :D *runs to google*

Sounds good though :)

Yeah, they're the usual cold cathodes but when you flick a switch, they react to sound. Type it into youtube, you can find loads of videos showing them there.

Good job fella, I remember the feeling I had when I completed my first build!

Oh you're also one of only a few people I've seen with a Xigmatek case (I have the Utgard) what did you think of yours? Did your HDD cage come with screws as with mine all I could do was push the HDD in and assume the (very) snug fit would hold it in place?

Yeah, the HDD cage had came with screws that just screwed into the bottom of each hard drive.

What a pain...

I installed the Titan Fenrir cooler yesterday. Firstly i've got to say how well packaged this thing was. It was hidden between two 2 inch thick blocks of foam inside a protective box.

The installation was a nightmare if i'm being honest. I took my the best part of three hours to do.

I stared with taking the stock cooler off of my CPU and cleaning them both with the ArctiClean TIM Remover And Surface Purifier which left my bedroom smelling of a Terrys chocolate orange for hours!

I then attached the bracket to the cooler, and fitted the four washers. I then took all of the screws off of the original back plate to get that off, only to find that the cut out on my case was about 2mm too small to i had to take out the graphics card, internet card, fan controller etc. and unplug my psu from everything and take my whole motherboard out of the case.

I then asked my brother to hold the cooler while i flip my motherboard upside down and then put it underneath. He took it from me, tipped it the wrong way round and dropped two of the washers. It then took me an hour on my hands and knees to find them both as they are made from a clear plastic.

Once found, i fixed the cooler to the motherboard using the smallest screws i have ever seen.

I then put the motherboard back in the case and screwed it back to it which was also a nightmare as the cooler is so big!

But after all of this, it is now in my case with the two fans in push-pull. under load, it is about half as load as the stock cooler at idle. My idle temps went from mid 40's to very low 30's and my load temps went from high low 70's to low 40's! :D

So all in all, this is a great cooler, it's just HUGE and used very tiny fiddly screws.

Im also going to try over clocking it further later today and see how it handles that.

I got the titan fenrir, it was a bit hard to get on, i couldnt figure out the metal hooks:p

I was going to get that but i heard that the frio was better and you can have 2 fans on it.

Sound to me like you had lots of fun with it. Glad it all sort and with nice temp drop :), good luck overclocking.

Thank you, going to try overclocking later, im also going to post a video of how FSX has improved with the temp drops and extra speed :D

Youtube Video Uploaded

My FSX is so smooth now. No lagging or anything, even when recording!

See for yourself, sorry it's not in HD as my others are, i don't know why it didn't upload it in HD:confused:

This video is using full payware scenery and 100% WOAI traffic to completley max out the PC

Let me know what you think:D

I've now overclocked this CPU to 3.80GHz and i think thats just about as far as it will go.

My temps haven't changed whatsoever from when it was at 3.60GHz so that's good.

I tried it at 4.00GHz which ran fine at idle, once again with no temp change from 3.60GHz, but when i ran the AMD overdrive stability test, after about 10 seconds the PC got a blue screen error and restarted.
