A bit nervous about my GPU purchase

I just bought an AMD 6800 Powercolour fighter and this will be my first AMD GPU ever. The RTX 3070 from Zotac was the same price but I picked the AMD 6800 anyway. The benchmark were impressive and the AMD card seams to be faster in most games. Ray tracing is nice but not a main priority with for me.

What are people experiences with the AMD 6800 ? any major issues? Will an I7 7700k be an issues in terms of bottleneck running a 1440p monitor with freesync? Is FRS 2.0 a viable option over DLSS?

I was without a GPU for the best part of a year after my 1070 died and prices were crazy high, I'm glad that prices are now normal.
Thanks

As said above, it depends on the game and the overclock really, many games still give you most of the performance with a high clocked hyper-threaded quad core, but there are some that start to choke with Skylake quad cores.

FSR 2.0 is a viable option when supported, but a 6800 shouldn't have much trouble at 1440p, especially if you don't care about ray tracing.

Nothing to worry about, many like me have gamed on AMD for years with no issues. Currently in the Nvidia camp with no issues either.

I think AMD are typically better in CPU limited systems due to less driver overhead, so probably a good choice if you're not interested in upgrading or RT.

Had AMD cards for 10+ years and not had that many issues. Have a 6900XT now and it works well, had one or two driver issues but they get fixed or can just go back a version until they get fixed, its probably the same for Nvidia drivers.

Great to hear positive experiences. My cpu is not overclocked, but might look in to it after I replace the thermal paste on my system (haven’t replaced it since I build it years ago). I think I’ll give the system a clean, replace the paste and install the GPU. My Corsair h110v2 is old and might not be working correctly…I have a lot to do .

After my GPU died I literally have been using my pc once a month or less hence I need to look in to things when the GPU arrives tomorrow. I also got some noctua thermal paste for the cpu.

Congrats on your purchase, it reviews well, https://youtu.be/fN53nFFHHb0.
I do find that I have a few more crashes with AMD than Nvidia but nothing I can't live with. Also some more bugs on AMD.
However, on the plus side I like the AMD software and take advantage of features such as Radeon chill. So I often prefer to use an AMD card than a Nvidia one.

I’ve had both Nvidia and AMD running in my house over the last few years. (5 pc household)
I generally buy whatever the best deal is, so in your case I feel the 6800 would be the better deal. However, AMD cards do crash more than Nvidia in my experience. Could be different for others but I’ve had more then enough circumstances of system lock ups when using AMD to just be a coincidence.
But don’t worry about it, they perform very well as a rule and I’d happily buy another.

I’ve run both AMD and nvidia cards over the years both have had driver horrors. Both my vega 64 and 6900xt drivers have been rock solid. I have seen windows update cause problems on my daughters PC. When ever I do a driver update now. I down load it. Disconnect the network. Then install stopping windows update ballsing anything up.

I've had both nV and AMD/ATI card, literally each generation, since 2002. Most recently, I've had a 6900 xt and a 3090. It's really a wash between both camps. Some games prefer nV amd some AMD, and the ones where there are major differences in performance are very few.

In the specific case of 6800 vs 3070, if you are not interested in RT, I'd go woth the 6800 which will almost invariably be able to surpass the 3070 in traditional rasterization when overclocked.

Given your CPU you may have antecedently hit on doing the clever thing.

AMD GPU's use the CPU much more efficiently than Nvidia GPU's, so you have a higher chance of hitting a bottleneck with Nvidia than you do with AMD, so an older 4 core CPU like yours will run better, significantly better with the GPU you chose than the RTX 3070 alternative.

It's definitely a great card when excluding RT (and even including, in some cases). I would upgrade the CPU asap though, it's not a terrible bottleneck for the most part but it will hold you back quite a bit depending on the game & settings.

I got bottleneck with 6700k and 3080 and 7700k not much different. Think its those pesky 4 cores and fact its over 5 years old. Flight Sim, CPunk, Control ran way better after upgrade.

Tried both but I always go back with AMD. I just get more performance for my money. Nowadays we have SAM, which makes me stick with an AMD CPU as well.

If AMD ever mess up a generation, I will skip it or hop over to Intel / Nvidia.

I've had a 6800 (non XT) for over a year. It's been a great card. I actually wanted this over a 6800xt as it's a real power/ performance sweetspot. OK, it's because I'm too lazy to change my PSU.
Anyway, been well pleased. I play mostly single-player 4k/60 stuff, but don't object to tweaking a few settings or using FSR. I've been pleased.
No major problems, although I would say if you want an easy life, stick to just the 'recommended only' drivers in AMD Adrenalin. Let others beta-test.
I play some VR on quest 2 & latest recommended drivers are fine, but the optional drivers have a lot of problems.
That's coming off the back of 10 years of NVidia only (because of CUDA for CG stuff, mainly).

I've always had AMD cards, and currently on an RX6800xt, before that, an rx6800. I've another pc with a 12100f and rx6700xt, never any issues with any of 'em. I agree with Troezar, I reckon most issues occur when peeps start fiddling and pushing things a bit too far, and regarding drivers, I had an issue with my old 5700, but that was sorted with a driver update fairly quickly. People tend to expound the virtues of DLSS, but poor old RSR and FSR from amd hardly gets a mention, and I can assure you that RSR works really well.
