A blessing?

I’ve been following gpu developments with great interest having been an avid pc enthusiast since first playing doom on pc on a 486
Everyone is understandably frustrated at not being able to get one of these new nvidia Gpu’s and I understand that frustration, I myself have a preorder that is some way off arriving with no delivery in sight.
But the longer the time drags on, the closer AMD’s big Navi is to arriving and the better it is looking in honesty.
I would look at this nvidia launch nightmare as a possible blessing for all of us because if AMD pull an “intel” on nvidia and release a card that is nearly as good or perhaps better than ampere - using much less power and at a better price.....I wonder how many of these nvidia pre orders will cancel and go for an AMD card?
With that choice being there as a direct result of the nvidia stock debacle
This Nvidia stock delay is actually lending itself to all of us getting that choice
Just a thought - this order delay may actually turn out to be a blessing for all of us.....

Correct, however the cult of Green will be along shortly to burn you x :-)

Agree fully as I’ve always bought nvidia though my first gpu was a diamond stealth 2mb, coupled with a voodoo 2 add on card - those were the days...:D
But then again I’ve always bought intel as well and look what AMD has done to them, the same thing could happen here to Nvidia.....
My point is this delay could be doing us a favour if big Navi turns out to be something really great and we will know that shortly

I have no brand loyalty. I've purchased ATI GPUs in the past. And Cirrus Logic and the rest. If AMD produce a worthwhile upgrade from my 2080 Ti at a reasonable price then I'll be interested.

Unless AMD new GPU's have G-sync they will nothing for me...
(and there no way i can see Nvidia letting AMD support G-Sync)

As am not going be replacing my G-sync monitor anytime soon

It may be a blessing for those people that are waiting for one. Not so much if you already have one. Lol

I can't see AMD beating the 3080, but they may be close to the 3070.

I'm sorry to say that even if AMD produced a better gpu than Nvidia at a lower price i'd still be inclined to buy Nvidia simply because of the regular driver problems with AMD.

amd can’t repeat what they did vs intel though. Amd plan with first ryzen was to get 80-90% of the performance of intel then add more cores and smt. They acctully beat intel in many areas to start taking sales from them. They then built up the processors up with each generation. Gen 1 ryzen whilst a really good cpu did have major issues. I have a 3900x and if leaks are correct I might get a 5900x but that’s the cpu.

on the gpu side they can’t use the same tactics. Nvidia have a lot going for them from diss to ray tracing to being the dominant graphic card in the pc space. They also keep all there features specific to there cards and any new tech going forward from the team green will be the same. I would love to see amd compete with the 3080 in all areas but so many unknowns with rdna 2 and so much extra on top of hardware they need to get right. The 5700xt to me was a good gpu for the money and I hope amd are competitive with nvidia across all the product lines but I can’t see happening this generation :(
I can see amd making a large step forward but I don’t think it will be a big enough step

It's plausible that AMD will come out with something competitive to Nvidia, even if just some of the rumours are true, and it's not like they've not spanked Nvidia in the past so we know they can do it. But I honestly wouldn't hold out on the stock problem. You have to realize that AMD are using TSMC for this and so are the PS5 and Xbox Series X launches and they're also both sold out completely on preorders with huge demand still left. I don't see TSMC doing any better in being able to rapidly flood the market with GPUs to keep up with consumer demand. Right now I'd put my money on AMD providing a like for like product but I'd also bet they're not going to be any more free from manufacturing constraints.

Most of the problems with this Nvidia launch aren't really Nvidias fault as such, supply chains and manufacturing during Covid is hard. You could argue they should have stockpiled prior to launch but then that'd just mean a later launch, it's not clear that's a benefit to anyone, if SOME people can get their cards earlier then why not allow for that and simply let there be a gamble/lottery on orders. Making everyone wait seems more "fair" but then everyone just gets their card later. If the AMD launch is anytime soon then most of the Nvidia orders will still be open and could potentially be cancelled in which case AMD will face the same problem of low supply and high demand and queues/delays.

Is it going to be way better than Nvidia, enough to bother waiting? Probably not. Assuming huge delays on both products anyone who is early in a queue for a 30 series card is probably best off just staying put and getting their card ASAP. However if you're in the market right now and face the possibility of joining the back of very long queues, it might be worth waiting.

AMDs CPUs have come a long way, price Vs performance in comparison to Intel is really good!

It'll be amazing if they can do the same with their GPUs, but I'm tied into Nvidia by Game Stream and G-Sync.

But if you're getting rid of your 3900X for a 5900X...dibs! (MM)

Some things are just less likely to happen I'm afraid :). Nvidia have not been asleep like intel and push their tech forward for non-gaming uses.
What AMD will probably do is to play at their GPU strengths. These GPU's are not going to be easy to compare like-for-like as in the past (RT, DLSS...) so if AMD can be outstanding in some areas that'll be great. The chances of AMD leapfrogging NV consider the entire package and feature set is unlikely. Tickling the fancies of a lot of AMD customers tho, for sure.

G-sync vs freesync seem little talked about atm. I was thinking "oh, well, I can see what AMD bring out" only then to realise any GPU I buy needs to be compatible with g-sync. So, buying an AMD GPU anytime soon for me is a no-go.

I do think AMD will be only too aware of their drivers issues and they will therefore understood the need to focus on that.
Let’s hope so because if AMD do release a big navi that is really good it can only be good for all of us

Have had both Amd and Nvidia cards over the years and cant say either have had any driver issues i can remember. I didnt tend to mess about too much and maybe that had something to do with it.
