I've heard some are bad due to noise, others due to the lack of air they push

who has an A/C unit... what make and model and how would you rate it ?

if you've got a top notch one thats absolutly magic please let me know, im melting.

No idea about A/C's here, but in India, where it's literally boiling :p I ahve some experience ;)

First off, depends on how much you wanna spend. You have a choice between a window AC and a split. The window, funnily enough, goes into your window and makes more noise than the split, but arent overly so. I have plenty of Hitachi's at the house India,s o can recommend them. Pretty silent and good.

The split's go on the wall, with a small pipe going to another uni, usually kept outside the house. You may have to make a hole in the wall depending on the location. Very silent, you won't even hear them. The hitachi one I have is good. Daikin are very good as well. They are more expensive than window though. But for a large room, probably better since they can be more powerful.

No idea where to get one from though, so you'l have to look around that yourself :p

Oh also, sometiems, the palces where I lived, the temperatures went up to 48 degrees. Unlikely to happen in this coutnry, so you won't need something as powerful. That should bring the price down a fair bit. On the other hand, London is just plain expensive so taht might just offset any price advantage :P

We have one of the free-standing ones and it's useless tbh. It will cool the room down but it's noisy, takes forever and is a total pain to setup as you have to put the exhaust air pipe out of a window and then try to seal the rest of the open window.

The best units to go for are the separated ones, where the heat exchanger and fan assembly goes on the outside of the building. These are much quieter and more efficient but obviously cost more, although you can pick them up for a few hundred quid on the bay.

Just to clarify, that's what I meant by "Splits"

haha, i love it every time there is a bit of sunshine there is always a post about home aircon units! happens every year! Try a search mate :)

i <3 you.

thanks for all your help.

for your information i searched the forum, didnt find anything so figured i'd call on experiance from people who own the actual product not hyped up spiel from the makers

if you dont like the thread, the obvious answer is not to post in it.

[edit] thanks to those who have suggested avoiding the portable ones... i was wondering how they got rid of the heat they produced... like firing the warmth out the back and the cool out the front and saying the job was reet[/edit]

Then sort your ventilation out - there is NO WAY the outside temperature at the time you posted this is any more than 14-15c, if that - something which most aircon units won't be able to cool your room to anyway.

That's true :p My hitachi ones range from 16-30 degrees centigrade.
Since outside temp is in 40s, tahts plenty cool ^_^
16 is cold even after some time. Around 23 is nice :)

oh ok let me jsut get in contact with the UNI and ask them to change their fire regulations meaning i can leave the kitchen door open... no better still i'll knock a wall down in halls

i wish some people emailed me for my life story before pretending to know everything about me... outside temp was between 20-25... but thanks for driving to stafford with your thermometer on the day of posting :)

im comfortable in anything between 65-75 deg F in the UK

Given your situation (Uni halls), you might be better of just getting a floor standing fan. They will push a fair amont of air around and make you feel a lot cooler, though your lecture notes will go flying all over the place. A fan will be cheaper, easier to setup and can be taken with you. Air con units tend also to be a bit heavy on the amount of electricity they use too, might want to bare this in mind when you make your decision.

Yeah, in halls you'll probably overload the electrical circuit and everyone will lose power in your flat :p They won't be happy about that :D

thanks, good advise that :)

the power im not too fussed about as its all included at the moment but will be extra next year when i move into a house... i may well just have to stick with a fan..

was kinda hoping some people around here might have a decent stand alone unit

Thanks, fRostiE
