A disk read Error occurred - What to do next?

Hi all,

Turned on the girlfriends laptop (Vaio VGN-BX296VP) the other day to be greeted by this. She has no recovery disks, which is immensely helpful, and looking round the other threads and solutions I could find I can't do a lot without them.

There's absolutely nothing worth saving on there so what would be the best thing to do? Get hold of and XP disk and just re-install?

Yeah you will need to check the hdd by using a boot disk, or using an XP cd. Has the laptop been dropped recently or anything like that?

Pretty sure it hasn't been but its a possibility.

The hdd could be physically damaged, can the bios see it being there?

Yeah its visible, not that it rules out it being damaged though I don't think. Just need to track down a copy of XP I can use now to see.
